Urbanization and habitat fragmentation reshape mammal communities on Santa Catarina Island, one of the largest Atlantic Forest islands in Brazil. Using camera traps across protected forest patches, we show that species richness declines with urban and unvegetated matrices, while abundance increases in smaller and more isolated fragments dominated by ...

New records of three species of nematodes in Cerdocyon thous from the Brazilian Pantanal wetlands
We report the occurrence of nematodes collected from the gut of roadkilled crab-eating foxes (two adult males and one juvenile female), Cerdocyon thous (Linnaeus, 1766), found on the BR 262 highway in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil in 2011.

Character displacement under influence of Bergmann’s rule in Cerdocyon thous (Mammalia: Canidae) [PDF]
In South America, the crab-eating fox Cerdocyon thous occurs in sympatry to the ecologically similar, and phylogenetically close Lycalopex vetulus to the North, and Lycalopex gymnocercus to the South of its range. We studied character displacement in Cerdocyon under the effect of Bergmann's rule and the presence (or absence either) of Lycalopex within ...

Cross-species transmission of gastrointestinal parasites between wild and domestic canids [PDF]
The interface between wild and domestic canids can facilitate cross-transmission of gastrointestinal parasites, with implications for biodiversity conservation and public health. In this study, we evaluated the occurrence and diversity of these parasites

ABSTRACT The hoary fox (Lycalopex vetulus) is the only mammalian carnivore endemic to Brazil. While its diet has been described in some regions, little is known about its population parameters, including its geographic distribution. Although traditionally considered endemic to the Cerrado, recent records from ecotone regions suggest its presence in ...

We found rich and compositionally different assemblages of medium and large‐sized mammals in protected areas on the southern edge of Amazon. However, both have high rates of mammal defaunation. We argue that anthropogenic threats in the Amazon Arc of Deforestation are eroding large ungulate populations, especially peccaries.

Diet and habitat use by two sympatric canids in the Pampas of South America [PDF]
The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) and the Pampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus) are two canids with very similar food and habitat requirements, which live in sympatry across parts of their distributions. Here we describe the diet and habitat use of both
