Conventional neuroradiological techniques, such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), make a fundamental contribution in both the acute and chronic phases of stroke. Recent years have witnessed the development of new imaging modalities, which include diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), perfusion-weighted imaging (PWI), CT ...

Effective management of patients who have cerebrovascular disease depends on accurate diagnosis. Many conditions cause clinical findings that closely mimic cerebrovascular disorders and are often ruled out through brain imaging or laboratory findings. Diagnosis of cerebrovascular disorders is based on the presence of risk factors for vascular disease ...

Five cases are presented illustrating some of the investigative and therapeutic dilemmas faced when treating patients with cerebrovascular disease in the outpatient clinic. The results of some recent major randomized controlled trials are applied to assist the decision-making process for individual patients. The investigation and management of patients

Remarks are made on various stroke topics-potential hazards in the early diagnosis of occlusion of the carotid, basilar, and middle cerebral arteries, dissection, discontinuing angicoagulants, lowering blood pressure, and delaying endarterectomy. The commentary also includes bolus versus continuous drip heparin, long-term warfarin therapy, extensive ...

With 16.9 million people who suffered a first-ever stroke in 2010 worldwide, stroke is a very common vascular disease. Epidemiologic studies have played an essential role in assessing this burden and in detecting the risk factors for stroke. Primary prevention of these risk factors, primarily hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and atrial fibrillation ...

Cerebrovascular neurosurgery 2014
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2015Continued advances in our understanding of the management of cerebrovascular disease were made in 2014. A randomized trial for management of unruptured brain arteriovenous malformation (ARUBA) (Mohr et al. Lancet 2014;383:614-21.) and the Scottish intracranial vascular malformation study (Al-Shahi Salman et al.

Carotid endarterectomy remains the preferred surgical intervention for the prevention of stroke among patients with extracranial cerebrovascular disease. Subgroup analyses of the results of several multicentre trials have contributed substantially to our understanding of the appropriate selection of patients and the perioperative risk associated with ...

Blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVI) are a rare but potentially devastating injury with stroke rates up to 50%. Over the past decade, the recognition and subsequent management of these injuries has undergone a marked evolution. This review will focus on the rationale for BCVI screening, imaging options, and treatment modalities. There are no ...

Cerebrovascular neurosurgery 2011
Journal of Clinical Neuroscience, 2012Several landmark studies in cerebrovascular neurosurgery were published in 2011. In this brief review, we highlight advances in our understanding of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVM), cavernous malformations (CM) and cerebral ischemia.
