Across Madagascar, treeless grasslands characterised by erosion gullies are named after forest and trees

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 1490-1504, November 2024.
Debates about the impacts of human settlement on Madagascar's habitat have missed the Malagasy perspective. Using indigenous and local knowledge in the form of toponyms, we find many regions across today's treeless grasslands are named after forest/trees, suggesting they may be novel.

Variation in plant defenses of Didymopanax vinosum (Cham. & Schltdl.) Seem. (Apiaceae) across a vegetation gradient in a Brazilian cerrado Variações no investimento em defesas em Didymopanax vinosum (Cham. & Schltdl.) Seem. (Apiaceae) ao longo de um gradiente de vegetação num cerrado brasileiro

open access: yesActa Botânica Brasílica, 2003
Cerrado vegetation is composed of a mosaic of vegetation types, from campo sujo, dominated by herbs; campo cerrado and cerrado sensu stricto, with shrubby vegetation; to cerradão, with trees forming a denser forest. This physiognomic mosaic is related to

A new antshrike (Aves: Thamnophilidae) endemic to the Caatinga and the role of climate oscillations and drainage shift in shaping cryptic diversity of Neotropical seasonal dry forests

open access: yesZoologica Scripta, Volume 53, Issue 5, Page 487-508, September 2024.
Abstract The Caatinga is the largest patch of Seasonal Dry Tropical Forest in the Neotropics, located in northeastern Brazil and characterized mainly by deciduous vegetation and extreme rainfall seasonality. It has historically been treated as a biologically impoverished domain, but recent studies uncovered new diversification patterns and several new ...

Modern pollen rain reveals differences across forests, open and mosaic landscapes in Madagascar

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 6, Issue 3, Page 729-742, May 2024.
Palaeoecological investigations are crucial in understanding millennial to centennial land use and land cover change. By analysing the modern pollen rain from four main vegetation types across Madagascar, this research provides baselines for improving the interpretation of pollen records in palaeoecological studies.

Using Multi‐Homolog Plant‐Wax Carbon Isotope Compositions to Reconstruct Tropical Vegetation Types

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 129, Issue 4, April 2024.
Abstract The stable carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of plant components such as plant wax biomarkers is an important tool for reconstructing past vegetation. Plant wax δ13C is mainly controlled by photosynthetic pathways, allowing for the differentiation of C4 tropical grasses and C3 forests.
