Abstract The cerrado rupestre is a physiognomy of the Cerrado biome with a prominent ground layer. It is characterized by rocky outcrops; acidic, nutrient-poor soil; and water shortage due to climatic seasonality. Species of this biome have several mechanisms to survive these adverse conditions.

Rocky outcrops are regarded as limiting factors for plant establishment in rupestrian environments. In this study, we tested whether the rock cover is associated with variations in species richness and density, height, and diameter of trees and shrubs in six Cerrado Rupestre sites in Central Brazil.
