The Economic and Ecological Impact of Soy in Brazil: A Synthetic Control Method Approach

open access: yesJournal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In recent decades, soy expansion in Brazil has generated significant environmental, social and economic impacts. However, there is no consensus about benefits and drawbacks, calling for a more careful account of the economic and ecological diversity of the territories where this phenomenon has been unfolding.

Transfer function-noise modeling and spatial interpolation to evaluate the risk of extreme (shallow) water-table levels in the Brazilian Cerrados

open access: yes, 2010
Water regimes in the Brazilian Cerrados are sensitive to climatological disturbances and human intervention. The risk that critical water-table levels are exceeded over long periods of time can be estimated by applying stochastic methods in modeling the ...

Aligning Transnational due Diligence: The EU Deforestation Regulation and Brazil's Fragmented Beef Governance

open access: yesGlobal Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Transnational due diligence regulations, such as the European Union Regulation on Deforestation‐Free Products (EUDR), are reshaping sustainability governance by transforming voluntary norms into binding global rules. Yet, their effectiveness depends on how well they align with domestic governance systems and on the power asymmetries that ...

Hidden Losses: Assessing the Risk of Coextinction Among Ectoparasitic Flies and Their Bat Host Species in Brazil

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
The potential impact of bat species extinction on the number of their ectoparasitic fly species, based on interaction data for Brazil. As bat host species are removed over time, more connected species (green) would experience steeper declines and lead to greater ectoparasite losses when compared to a random extinction model (gray).

Morphology of Guard Hairs in Amazonian Marsupials: Intergeneric Variation, Habitat and Habit Association in a Phylogenetic Framework of the Order Didelphimorphia

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The cuticle and medulla of guard hairs exhibit distinct morphological patterns among mammalian species. To investigate this variability in marsupials from the Brazilian Amazon, we analysed guard hairs from nine Didelphimorphia species and incorporated data from an additional 25 didelphid species.

A framework for maximizing the benefit from retaining regrowth on private land

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Conservation interventions often have lower‐than‐desired positive impacts, as revealed by retrospective counterfactual‐based evaluations. To address this, a prospective counterfactual‐based approach can be used to estimate potential benefits and design conservation interventions to maximize outcomes. We developed a framework for estimating the

Identifying hotspots of faunal data deficiency to direct urgent research and monitoring

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Data deficiency is a substantial challenge for extinction risk assessments because incomplete data means we cannot accurately identify priority protected areas for conservation. Here, we use the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) distributions of amphibians, sharks and rays, fish, mammals, birds, and reptiles to identify ...
