Optical Coherence Tomography as an Emerging Technique for Identifying Pediatric Middle Ear Effusion
The Laryngoscope, Volume 136, Issue 5, Page 2349-2355, May 2026.This prospective study evaluated optical coherence tomography (OCT) as a diagnostic tool for identifying middle ear effusion (MEE) in 164 pediatric patients. OCT was determined to have a sensitivity of 74% and a specificity of 93%, comparable to otoscopy and tympanometry, with moderate agreement (κ = 0.41) between clinical and non‐clinical raters.

At initial presentation, computed tomography of the skull was performed, which revealed a non‐contrast‐enhancing mass effect in the ear canal.
