Cervical cancer screening in The Netherlands
European Journal of Cancer, 2000The Netherlands is among the European countries with low incidence and almost lowest mortality from cancer of the uterine cervix. Screening started around 1970, being a combination of local and regional invitational programmes and opportunistic screening. In 1996 screening activities have been structured to a new national and nationwide programme.

Cervical cancer continues to be a major health problem in the developing world, where screening is not universal. Exfoliative cervical cytology or the Pap test is the primary tool in screening for cervical cancer. The Pap smear is effective in the diagnosis of preinvasive cervical carcinoma.
