Colposcopy and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia
Obstetrics, Gynaecology & Reproductive Medicine, 2017Abstract Cervical cancer is caused by certain types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and is preceded by a long pre-cancerous stage of Cervical Intra-epithelial Neoplasia (CIN). Cervical cancer can be prevented by successful introduction of an HPV immunization programme and screening using HPV testing, cytology and colposcopy.

Recent developments include a potential role for liquid‐based cytology, human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, the prospect of molecular markers of CIN and a possible role for optoelectronic devices.
