Management of the Suspicious Cervical Lymph Node

A common and serious error in management of patients with suspicious cervical lymph nodes is immediate biopsy. Enlarged cervical nodes may be the only clinical manifestation of cancer, and a search for the primary lesion takes top priority. Anyone excising such a node should be prepared to follow through with radical neck dissection.

The use of sonography in differentiating cervical lymphomatous lymph nodes from cervical metastatic lymph nodes

Lymphoma and metastases are common causes of cervical lymphadenopathy. Clinical examination alone is unable to differentiate the two. Ultrasound (US) with its high sensitivity and specificity when combined with a find needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is therefore the ideal initial investigation.
