Degenerative changes of the cervical spine are the primary cause of nerve root compression leading to symptomatic radiculopathy. Genetic and age-related changes, including loss of intervertebral disc height, as well as facet and uncovertebral joint hypertrophy, produce narrowing of the neural foramen.
