Myelin Maintenance and Addition Regulate Synaptic Plasticity in the Adult Mouse Cortex

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 12, December 2026.
We report that existing myelin allows neurons to remain plastic throughout life, while new myelin progressively stabilises synapses along the basal but not apical dendrites of layer V pyramidal neurons in the motor cortex. ABSTRACT Myelin has the capacity to affect synapse number or plasticity across the lifespan.

1D Pre‐Acquisition Navigator Correcting Respiratory‐Induced Field Fluctuations in Multi‐Echo Gradient‐Echo Imaging of the Thoracic Spinal Cord

open access: yesMagnetic Resonance in Medicine, Volume 96, Issue 6, Page 2660-2674, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Purpose In the spinal cord (SC), multi‐echo gradient echo (ME‐GRE) increases gray (GM) and white matter (WM) contrast and improves sensitivity to lesions in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS). However, SC ME‐GRE is susceptible to breathing‐induced field fluctuations, causing ghosting artifacts and signal loss.

Mechanical Characterization of Cervical Spinal Cord Tissue Under Varied Environmental Conditions

open access: yesProceedings in Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, Volume 26, Issue 4, December 2026.
ABSTRACT Identifying material parameters for cervical spinal cord tissue requires an understanding of how testing protocols affect the measured response. We use ovine cervical spinal cord white matter to examine the effects of hydration, temperature, adhesive fixation and repeated loading.

Patterns of spinal motion, kinematic spaces and the land‐to‐sea transition in carnivorans

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 309, Issue 11, Page 3257-3275, November 2026.
Using 3D reconstructions, we quantify intervertebral joint mobility to investigate how cervical, thoracic, and lumbar vertebral regions evolved distinct kinematic roles in pinnipeds. The findings reveal lineage‐specific adaptations for swimming and highlight the functional significance of vertebral joint flexibility in ecological transitions.

The Maintenance of Dysmyelinated Small‐Diameter Axons by 14‐3‐3s in the Central Nervous System

open access: yesGlia, Volume 74, Issue 11, November 2026.
Dysmyelinated small‐diameter axons are maintained in teneurin‐4 deficient mice at the age of 1 year, while axonal damage is observed. 14‐3‐3s are highly expressed and suppress the progression of the damage in these axons. ABSTRACT In the central nervous system, myelin formed around nerve axons by oligodendrocyte enables efficient conduction of action ...
