Cesium isotope ratios as indicators of nuclear power plant operations

Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2011
There are multiple paths by which radioactive cesium can reach the effluent from reactor operations. The radioactive (135)Cs/(137)Cs ratios are controlled by these paths. In an effort to better understand the origin of this radiation, these (135)Cs/(137)Cs ratios in effluents from three power reactor sites have been measured in offsite samples.

Plutonium and cesium isotopes in river waters in Japan

Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry Articles, 1990
Concentrations of cesium isotopes and plutonium in river water samples in Japan, collected during the period from June 1985 to February 1987, have been measured. The total137Cs concentrations in the Japanese river waters ranged from 0.063 to 1.89 mBq·l−1. The portion of particulate137Cs to total was observed to be less than 10 to 35%.

An isotope dilution–precipitation process for removing radioactive cesium from wastewater

Journal of Hazardous Materials, 2012
A novel isotope dilution-precipitation method has been developed to remove cesium-137 from radioactive wastewater. The process involves adding stable cesium chloride to wastewater in order to raise the total cesium concentration, which then allows both the stable and radioactive cesium ions to be precipitated together using sodium tetraphenylborate ...

Cesium, americium and plutonium isotopes in ground level air of vilnius

Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, 2006
Systematic observations of radionuclide composition and concentration in the atmosphere have been carried out at the Institute of Physics in Vilnius since 1963. Increases in activity concentration of radionuclides in the atmosphere were observed after nuclear weapon tests and the Chernobyl NPP accident.

Alpha decay studies of tellurium, iodine, xenon and cesium isotopes

Nuclear Physics A, 1979
Abstract Very neutron-deficient isotopes in the trans-tin region were produced by reactions of 290 MeV 58 Ni ions on 58 Ni targets, and studied by on-line mass separation at GSI. Twelve α-emitters — 107–110 Te, 110–113 I, 111–113 Xe, 114 Cs — were identified.

Radioactive and stable cesium isotope distributions and dynamics in Japanese cedar forests

Journal of Environmental Radioactivity, 2018
Dynamics of the Fukushima-derived radiocesium and distribution of the natural stable isotope 133Cs in Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) forest ecosystems were studied during 2014-2016. For the experimental site in Yamakiya, Fukushima Prefecture, we present the redistribution of radiocesium among ecosystem compartments during the entire ...

Accelerator mass spectrometry of cesium isotopes

2015
Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) is a highly sensitive method to determine isotopic ratios in natural samples down to extremely low levels of about 10−15. The challenge in measuring the cesium isotopes 135Cs and 137Cs is the isobaric interference of barium. Naturally occurring abundances are estimated to (135,137Cs)/133Cs=10−11. This thesis presents

Relativistic mean-field theory on the xenon, cesium and barium isotopes

Nuclear Physics A, 1995
Abstract We apply the relativistic mean-field theory to unstable nuclei with Z = 54, 55 and 56. We compare the results of calculations to experimental data of the mean-square-charge radii and binding energies using the parameter set, TM1. The constraint calculations results in an energy curve as a function of deformation with several candidates for ...

Semi-Portable Whole-Body Counter for Cesium 137 and Other Gamma-Emitting Isotopes

Acta Radiologica: Therapy, Physics, Biology, 1963
A whole-body counter for determination of body burdens of Cs/sup 137/ and other isotopes is described. The counter, easily assembled and disassembled, has small dimensions and the weight is less than 1500 kg. The background reduction is obtained by lead shielding.
