Gastrotrichs are meiobenthic invertebrates of obscure origin and unclear phylogenetic alliances. Uncertainties also plague the intra-group relationship with major contrasts between the evolutionary scenarios inferred from morphology or molecules. In this

Invertebrate systematics
Freshwater meiofauna in the Neotropics remain vastly understudied, and many species are yet to be discovered due to sampling biases and methodological constraints. In this study, we describe Carianotus dives gen. nov., sp.

Widespread hermaphroditism in freshwater gastrotrichs
, 2005. Freshwater members of the phylum Gastrotricha were long thought to lack male gametes and to exist exclusively as parthenogenetic females. The surprising 1978 discovery of sperm in the common species Lepidodermella squamata raised the question of how ...

During a survey of the marine meiobenthos in a predominantly muddy area, 40 km south of Venice (northern Adriatic Sea, Italy), 11 species of gastrotrichs were recorded. Gastrotrichs were found in 11 out of the 16 investigated stations, with densities (mean ± standard deviation) ranging from 0.6 ± 0.5 to 97.7 ± 71.2 ind./10 cm2.

Demographic life history data are used as a means of assessing effects of increasing concentrations of DDT on the longevity and reproductive rate of Lepidodermella squammata, a common aquatic micrometazoan, These obligate parthenogens were cultured individually in slide depressions, each juvenile being transferred to its own depression upon hatching ...

AbstractThe taxon Neodasys has a basal position within Gastrotricha. This makes it very interesting for phylogenetic considerations in this group. To complete the reconstruction of the nephridial system in the stem species of Gastrotricha started earlier, we have studied the whole protonephridial system of Neodasys chaetonotoideus by means of complete ...

Baltic Sea Gastrotricha—one new species and one new record of Chaetonotida from Poland
Zootaxa, 2015Gastrotricha is a cosmopolitan phylum of aquatic and semi–aquatic invertebrates that comprise about 820 described species, which are divided into two orders: Chaetonotida Remane, 1925 [Rao & Clausen, 1970] and Macrodasyida Remane, 1925 [Rao & Clausen, 1970].
