A 77-year-old man presented with macroscopic haematuria and oligo-anuric renal failure. A renal biopsy showed moderate linear glomerular basement membrane (GBM) staining with λ light chains alone, but both circulating IgG and λ light chain activity were present. The discovery and development of the catalysis of stannane-mediated radical chain reactions by benzeneselenol, generated in situ by reduction of diphenyl diselenide with tributyltin hydride, are described. The catalytic sequence is discussed in terms of polarity reversal catalysis of radical chain reactions, and applications to synthesis are presented.

Mechanical limitation of bacterial motility mediated by growing cell chains

Contrasting most known bacterial motility mechanisms, a bacterial sliding motility discovered in at least two gram-positive bacterial families does not depend on designated motors. Instead, the cells maintain end-to-end connections following cell divisions to form long chains and exploit cell growth and division to push the cells forward.

Zinc-Mediated Chain Extension of β-Keto Phosphonates

A variety of beta-keto phosphonates can be converted to gamma-keto phosphonates through reaction with ethyl(iodomethyl)zinc. The presence of alpha-alkyl substituents, Lewis basic functionality, and modestly acidic NH-protons are accommodated in substrates of this reaction.
