Crossover transition in flowing granular chains
Physical Review E, 2009We report on the dynamical and statistical behavior of flowing collections of granular chains confined two-dimensionally (2D) within a rotating tumbler. Experiments are conducted with systems of chains of fixed length, but various lengths are considered.

Generating Markov-Chain Transitions Quickly: II
ORSA Journal on Computing, 1991A predecessor to this paper gives a way to generate transitions in continuous-time Markov chains. It is fast when a “similarity” condition holds. Exploiting a balanced binary search tree, we reduce the computational complexity of that method. INFORMS Journal on Computing, ISSN 1091-9856, was published as ORSA Journal on Computing from 1989 to 1995 ...

Phase transitions in nonlinear oscillator chains
Physical Review E, 1996It is shown numerically that a one-dimensional system of coupled disparate nonlinear oscillators undergoes a phase transition from a synchronized to a desynchronized state as the range of interactions is decreased. Using a coupling that decreases with distance as ${r}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$, the functional dependence of the critical ...

Shadowable chain transitive sets
Journal of Difference Equations and Applications, 2013Let f be a diffeomorphism of a closed manifold M, and let be a closed f-invariant set. In this paper, by applying the reasoning developed in Wen et al. [J. Differ. Equ. 246 (2009), pp. 340–357] based on Liao, we study chain transitive sets in view of shadowing theory, and it is proved that is chain transitive and -stably shadowing if and only if is ...

Phase transitions in Ising Chains?
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2009An open question in the study of the spin‐1/2 Ising model is the solution of the two‐dimensional case in the presence of a magnetic field. A possible answer is based on the study of L‐coupled linear chains in the limit of large L. Results reported in the literature show that a dimensional crossover from the one to the two dimensional model does not ...

Generating Markov-Chain Transitions Quickly: I
ORSA Journal on Computing, 1990We give a way to generate transitions directly from a compact representation of the generator of a continuous-time Markov chain corresponding to a class that includes many queueing networks and reliability problems. Under specified conditions, this is (provably) faster than generating these transitions via a future-event schedule.

Nematic-Smectic Transition of Semiflexible Chains
Physical Review Letters, 1996The theory of the nematic-smectic phase transition of uniform semiflexible chains with hard-core repulsion is presented. The flexibility of the chains is shown to result in a strong first-order transition. The calculated spinodal of the uniform nematic phase and the period of the modulation instability are consistent with recent experiments.

Robust chain transitive vector fields
Asian-European Journal of Mathematics, 2015Let M be a closed n(≥2)-dimensional smooth Riemannian manifold and let X be a vector field on M. In this paper, we show that the robust chain transitive set is hyperbolic if and only if there are a C1-neighborhood [Formula: see text] of X and a compact neighborhood U of the chain transitive set such that for any [Formula: see text], the index of the ...

Shadowing and internal chain transitivity
Fundamenta Mathematicae, 2013The main result of this paper is that a map f : X → X which has shadowing and for which the space of ω-limits sets is closed in the Hausdorff topology has the property that a set A ⊆ X is an ω-limit set if and only if it is closed and internally chain transitive.
