New Zealand loggers commonly use chainsaws weighing up to 10 kg. Chainsaw work is both physically arduous and potentially dangerous. A contributing factor to the high injury rate of loggers could be the high physiological and biomechanical load of chainsaw work.

Unusual suicide with a chainsaw
Forensic Science International, 2013A 39-year-old male, with a history of multiple suicidal attempts and psychiatric pathology, a professional lumberjack, was found dead at the meadow with his throat cut and a chainsaw beside him. Autopsy revealed that all physical injuries were confined to the head, neck and left shoulder.

A survey of 47 patients who sustained severe chainsaw injuries has been carried out. It shows that this machine, while an extremely useful one, is hazardous. Most of the patients were young, and over half of the injuries involved a hand. One fatality was recorded.
