Abstract This chapter is about Chamorro, a non-Oceanic Malayo-Polynesian outlier language spoken on the Mariana Islands in the western Pacific. Unlike the languages of the Oceanic subgroup to which all but two languages in the Pacific belong, Chamorro is lexically, phonologically and morphologically quite conservative.

Scholars of music, culture and history in the Marianas Islands have paid little attention to contemporary Chamorro language music. In part, it has been dismissed on grounds of its 'inauthenticity'. And yet, the music has deep meaning for the generations of Chamorros who came of age in the three decades after World War II.

This chapter provides the first comprehensive account of the inflectional morphology of the Austronesian language Chamorro. It aims at clarifying a number of controversial issues such as the morphological status of the person markers (prefixes vs. proclitics) in the perfective aspect.
