Channel Coding for Optical Channels
2010In this chapter, we describe different forward error correction (FEC) schemes currently in use or suitable for use in optical communication systems. We start with the description of standard block codes. The state-of-the-art in optical communication systems standardized by the ITU employ concatenated Bose–Chaudhuri–Hocquenghem (BCH)/RS codes [1, 2 ...

Joint Source-Channel Coding Using Variable-Length Codes
Problems of Information Transmission, 2001The paper presents a decoding algorithm for joint source-channel coding when variable-length codes are used for information transmission over a discrete memoryless channel. The asymptotic lower bound on the exponent of the decoding error probability for variable-length codes has been established.

Reliable communication over a noisy channel is the focus of this chapter. The chapter begins with a development of the classic fundamental results of Feinstein regarding reliable communication of block codes and the relation of operational channel capacity to Shannon capacity for discrete channels. A technique of Dobrushin is used to extend Feinstein’s
