A dataset of individual wet weights of benthic macroinvertebrates

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, Volume 9, Issue 6, Page 696-715, December 2024.
Abstract Biomass estimates are crucial for modeling and understanding energy flow through ecosystems. Many modeling frameworks rely on published body weights of organisms to convert density estimates to biomass. However, published body weight data are limited to few taxa in a limited number of systems. Here we present mean individual weights for common

Effects of Metabolic Disruption on Lipid Metabolism and Yolk Retention in Zebrafish Embryos

open access: yesEnvironmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Volume 43, Issue 8, Page 1880-1893, August 2024.
Abstract A subgroup of endocrine‐disrupting chemicals have the ability to disrupt metabolism. These metabolism‐disrupting chemicals (MDCs) can end up in aquatic environments and lead to adverse outcomes in fish. Although molecular and physiological effects of MDCs have been studied in adult fish, few studies have investigated the consequences of ...

The effect of water turbidity on prey consumption and female feeding patterns in African turquoise killifish

open access: yesEcology of Freshwater Fish, Volume 33, Issue 3, July 2024.
Abstract Water turbidity alters prey detectability and prey selection by a predator. In dimorphic mesopredators, the effect of water turbidity on foraging success may be sex specific, primarily due to sex differences in reproductive allotment, body size and vulnerability to predation.

The mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi (Diptera: Chaoboridae)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, 1979
AbstractThe mouthparts of female Corethrella brakeleyi and C. wirthi were studied using light and electron microscopy. Mandibles, hypopharynx and labium are highly sclerotized and are modified for obtaining blood meals. All structures were larger in C. brakeleyi than in C.

Method for culturing the phantom midge, Chaoborus (Diptera: Chaoboridae), in the laboratory

open access: yesAquaculture, 1986
Abstract Chaoborus punctipennis (Say) was cultured in a cage positioned over an aquarium containing lake water, sediments, and artificial plants. During a 40-day period, 61 fertilized egg rafts were laid yielding approximately 21 130 first instars. Egg rafts averaged 380 eggs (n = 23) with 91.2% hatching success.
