Temperature affects selectivity of Chaoborus larvae-eating Daphnia
Hydrobiologia, 1996In ponds, a chemical produced by predaceous Chaoborus (Insecta, Diptera) larvae changes the development of juvenile Daphnia pulex (Crustacea, Branchiopoda) so the juveniles grow spines (neckteeth) on the back of their head. It is generally assumed that the spined phenotype is (or is an indicator of) a morphological predator defense.

Metabolic expenditures in Chaoborus larvae1
Limnology and Oceanography, 1980The energy consumption of 4th instar larvae of Chaoborus trivittatus of two different ages was determined in a respirometer. Measurements included energy consumption of fed larvae at 13° and 21°C, as well as an estimate of the cost of process: ng food or specific dynamic action (equals the metabolic rate of starved larvae × 0.369).

Diel oxygen uptake in Chaoborus punctipennis (diptera : culicidae)
Hydrobiologia, 1978Oxygen consumption (µl/ mg dry wt. · hr−1 corrected to STP) in Chaoborus punctipennis was measured in a Gilson differential respirometer at two-hour intervals during 24-hour periods. Animals were held at controlled conditions similar to those at the time of collection.

Demographic costs of Chaoborus-induced phenotypic plasticity in Daphnia pulex
Oecologia, 1990It has been proposed that morphological defenses against predation have demographic costs. We measured the cost of a predator-induced morphological defense, using predaceous phantom midge larvae Chaoborus americanus (Insecta, Diptera) and the prey species Daphnia pulex (Crustacea, Cladocera).

Prey selection by Chaoborus punctipennis under laboratory conditions
Hydrobiologia, 1980Equal numbers of Diaphanosoma leuchtenbergianum, Daphnia parvula, and Diaptomus pallidus were offered to individual, fourth-instar larvae of Chaoborus punctipennis. When the prey species were presented separately to the larvae, 100% of the Diaphanosoma, 67% of the Daphnia, and 57% of the Diaptomus were consumed.

Chaoborus behavioural responses to changes in fish density
Fundamental and Applied Limnology, 1999The response of Chaoborus to biomanipulation-induced changes in fish community structure was studied in two small south-central Ontario lakes which had similar physical and chemical characteristics. The biomanipulation involved: (a) three years (1991-1993) of pre-manipulation characterization of the food webs in two lakes with very different food web ...
