The control of indirect effects of biomanipulation [PDF]
Results from long-term investigations on biomanipulation show that indirect effects are at least as important as direct effects are for the stability of biomanipulation.

Where Do You Fly From? Assessing Aerial Dispersal in Temporary Rivers Using Stable Isotopes
ABSTRACT Dispersal is a crucial ecological process that facilitates gene flow and species exchange within ecosystems. In temporary rivers (TRs), dispersal is a key driver of community assembly because it determines the ability of the organisms to adapt to seasonal drying and maintain stable populations.

Results of the first hydroacoustic survey of the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria [PDF]
A lakewide hydroacoustic research programme was designed in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria in order to ascertain the status of fish stocks. Data obtained from the hydroacoustic surveys were complemented with by catch data from multi mesh gillnets ...

Proteomic analysis of Daphnia magna hints at molecular pathways involved in defensive plastic responses [PDF]
Background: Phenotypic plasticity in defensive traits occurs in many species when facing heterogeneous predator regimes. The waterflea Daphnia is well-known for showing a variety of these so called inducible defences.

ABSTRACT 5α‐Cyprinol sulfate (CPS), a kairomone released by cyprinid fishes, induces diel vertical migration (DVM) in Daphnia and thus shapes ecosystem dynamics wherever both taxa co‐occur. Here, we provide the first in situ quantification of CPS turnover, revealing strong temporal variability in this chemical signal and its ecosystem‐wide consequences

The role of Yssichromis species (Pisces: Cichlidae) in the trophic ecology and foodwebs of Lake Victoria [PDF]
Many haplochromine cichlids coexisted in Lake Victoria before the upsurge of Nile perch. The introduction of the Nile perch led to depletion of many haplochromines and other fish species in Lake Victoria.

Combining Hydroacoustics and eDNA to Estimate Species‐Specific Biomass in a Pelagic Fish Community
Integrated eDNA and hydroacoustic surveys were used to determine species‐specific assemblages in a well‐studied pelagic fish community. The detection and proportion of target species estimated by eDNA were comparable to that of historic gill‐netting surveys.
