The control of indirect effects of biomanipulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
Results from long-term investigations on biomanipulation show that indirect effects are at least as important as direct effects are for the stability of biomanipulation.

Diel vertical distribution of planktonic microcrustaceans (Crustacea: Cladocera, Copepoda) in a natural shallow lake from Transylvania, Romania

open access: yesJournal of Limnology, 2014
The diel vertical migration (DVM) of planktonic cladocerans and copepods was investigated in Lake Ştiucii, a natural shallow lake from north-western Romania.

Where Do You Fly From? Assessing Aerial Dispersal in Temporary Rivers Using Stable Isotopes

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 70, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Dispersal is a crucial ecological process that facilitates gene flow and species exchange within ecosystems. In temporary rivers (TRs), dispersal is a key driver of community assembly because it determines the ability of the organisms to adapt to seasonal drying and maintain stable populations.

Multiple stressor effects on water quality in Poplar Bay, Lake of the Woods, Canada: a midge-based assessment of hypolimnetic oxygen conditions over the last two centuries

open access: yesJournal of Limnology, 2012
Chironomid and Chaoborus (midge) remains preserved in a dated sediment core from Poplar Bay, Lake of the Woods (LOW), Ontario, Canada, were used to assess the effects of multiple stressors (e.g., recent warming and shoreline development) on water quality

Results of the first hydroacoustic survey of the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
A lakewide hydroacoustic research programme was designed in the Ugandan waters of Lake Victoria in order to ascertain the status of fish stocks. Data obtained from the hydroacoustic surveys were complemented with by catch data from multi mesh gillnets ...

Proteomic analysis of Daphnia magna hints at molecular pathways involved in defensive plastic responses [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Background: Phenotypic plasticity in defensive traits occurs in many species when facing heterogeneous predator regimes. The waterflea Daphnia is well-known for showing a variety of these so called inducible defences.

Signals in Flux: Investigating the Seasonal Turnover of the Diel Vertical Migration‐Inducing Kairomone 5α‐Cyprinol Sulfate

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 70, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT 5α‐Cyprinol sulfate (CPS), a kairomone released by cyprinid fishes, induces diel vertical migration (DVM) in Daphnia and thus shapes ecosystem dynamics wherever both taxa co‐occur. Here, we provide the first in situ quantification of CPS turnover, revealing strong temporal variability in this chemical signal and its ecosystem‐wide consequences

The role of Yssichromis species (Pisces: Cichlidae) in the trophic ecology and foodwebs of Lake Victoria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2000
Many haplochromine cichlids coexisted in Lake Victoria before the upsurge of Nile perch. The introduction of the Nile perch led to depletion of many haplochromines and other fish species in Lake Victoria.

Combining Hydroacoustics and eDNA to Estimate Species‐Specific Biomass in a Pelagic Fish Community

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 5, September–October 2025.
Integrated eDNA and hydroacoustic surveys were used to determine species‐specific assemblages in a well‐studied pelagic fish community. The detection and proportion of target species estimated by eDNA were comparable to that of historic gill‐netting surveys.

Hydroacoustic assessment of fish and Chaoborus (Diptera-Chaoboridae) distribution in three Neotropical lakes Avaliação hidroacústica da distribuição de peixes e Chaoborus sp. (Diptera-Chaoboridae) em três lagos neotropicais

open access: yesActa Limnologica Brasiliensia, 2012
AIM: This study aims to demonstrate the potential of hydroacoustics in the study of behavior of the invertebrate Chaoborus and fish in neotropical water environments; METHODS: Synoptic campaigns were conducted in May and June-2008 in Dom Helvécio and ...
