Influence of the dietary contribution of terrestrial insects to the condition factor of bleak Alburnus alburnus in a highly polluted lowland river

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 105, Issue 5, Page 1445-1454, November 2024.
Abstract Bleak Alburnus alburnus is a highly abundant but understudied fish species, and we know little about the trophic ecology of populations inhabiting rivers in central Europe. From an ecosystem perspective, this fish species is interesting as it is known to feed on surface insects, thereby linking the terrestrial with the aquatic habitat.

New characid fish, Hyphessobrycon scutulatus, from the rio Teles Pires drainage, upper rio Tapajós system (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae)

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
A new species of characid fish, Hyphessobrycon scutulatus, is described from the rio Teles Pires drainage, upper rio Tapajós system. The new species is distinct from all Hyphessobrycon species by the following characters: inner row premaxillary teeth 7 ...

Meristic co‐evolution and genomic co‐localization of lateral line scales and vertebrae in Central American cichlid fishes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 9, September 2024.
We dissect the co‐evolution and genetic architecture of lateral line scale counts and vertebrae numbers in Neotropical Heroine cichlids. Our phylogenetic comparative analyses recovered a positive correlation between these two traits. Furthermore, our qualitative traits locus (QTL) analyses identified significant genomic co‐localized associations for ...

Two new Bryconamericus: B. cinarucoense n. sp. and B. singularis n. sp. (Characiformes, Characidae) from the Cinaruco River, Orinoco Basin, with keys to all Venezuelan species [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Here we describe for the first time Bryconamericus cinarucoense n. sp. and Bryconamericus singularis n. sp., two new species of Characiformesfrom the Cinaruco River, Orinoco Basin in Venezuela. B. cinarucoense n. sp.

Quantitative impacts of hydroelectric dams on the trans‐Amazonian migrations of goliath catfish

open access: yesConservation Letters, Volume 17, Issue 5, September/October 2024.
Abstract Hydropower expansion is increasingly responsible for connectivity and biodiversity loss in freshwater ecosystems. The Amazon basin, which supports the highest level of freshwater biodiversity globally, faces such unplanned expansion. Here, we demonstrate and quantify the impacts of two major hydroelectric dams on the Madeira River on the trans‐

A new species of Astyanax (Ostariophysi: Characiformes: Characidae) from the upper rio Iguaçu basin, southern Brazil

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
Astyanax eremus, a new species of geographically isolated characid fish, is described from a small tributary of the upper rio Iguaçu basin. The new species belongs to the Astyanax scabripinnisspecies complex and is easily distinguished from its congeners

New Late Tertiary Fish Fossils from the Sinda Region, Eastern Zaire [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
An assemblage of about 200 fish remains, recently collected from late Miocene early Pliocene deposits of the Sinda area, is described. Although the collection is small, several taxa not previously reported from these localities are included.

Myers' divisions revisited: Contemporary evidence for distinct trait differences among global inland fishes

open access: yesFish and Fisheries, Volume 25, Issue 4, Page 672-685, July 2024.
‘Our global assessment showed multiple differences in salinity tolerance, morphological and life‐history traits, distributional ranges and genetic diversity among the three Myers' fish divisions (i.e. primary, secondary and peripheral fish), but also large variability and overlap among groups in some features’.

A checklist of chromosome numbers and karyotypes of Amazonian freshwater fishes [PDF]

open access: yes, 1992
