B chromosomes in Astyanax scabripinnis (Pisces, Characidae) [PDF]
A karyotypic analysis was carried out using conventional staining and C-banding in 32 specimens of Astyanax scabripinnis (Pisces, Characidae) from Campos do Jordao (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). Twenty-eight individuals (87.5 per cent of the sample studied) showed 1–2 extra B-chromosomes, similar in size and shape (metacentrics) to pair 1 of the karyotype,

Continuous tooth replacement: what can teleost fish teach us?
ABSTRACT Most tooth‐bearing non‐mammalian vertebrates have the capacity to replace their teeth throughout life. This capacity was lost in mammals, which replace their teeth only once at most. Not surprisingly, continuous tooth replacement has attracted much attention. Classical morphological studies (e.g.

Abstract A new species of characid with remarkable sexual characteristics is described from the upper Guayabero River drainage from the Orinoco basin in Colombia. The new species is included in the genus Monotocheirodon by sharing most of the previously proposed diagnostic features of this genus.

Inheritance of Trunk Banding in the Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi Characidae) [PDF]
The tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) exhibits two phenotypes associated with trunk banding. Fish possess either a smoky-gray coloration with two prominent black vertical bands located directly behind the operculum (black tetra) or a lighter coloration and lack these bands (white skirt tetra).

Telencephalic eversion in embryos and early larvae of four teleost species
The telencephalon of ray‐finned fishes undergoes eversion, not evagination as in the rest of vertebrates. We show that the formation of the ventricle followed by a rostro‐caudal telencephalic expansion is key for the formation of an everted telencephalon in teleosts.
