B chromosomes in Astyanax scabripinnis (Pisces, Characidae) [PDF]

open access: yesHeredity, 1992
A karyotypic analysis was carried out using conventional staining and C-banding in 32 specimens of Astyanax scabripinnis (Pisces, Characidae) from Campos do Jordao (Sao Paulo State, Brazil). Twenty-eight individuals (87.5 per cent of the sample studied) showed 1–2 extra B-chromosomes, similar in size and shape (metacentrics) to pair 1 of the karyotype,

Continuous tooth replacement: what can teleost fish teach us?

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 99, Issue 3, Page 797-819, June 2024.
ABSTRACT Most tooth‐bearing non‐mammalian vertebrates have the capacity to replace their teeth throughout life. This capacity was lost in mammals, which replace their teeth only once at most. Not surprisingly, continuous tooth replacement has attracted much attention. Classical morphological studies (e.g.

A new characid species with remarkable sexual dimorphism (Characiformes: Characidae: Stevardiinae) from the upper Guayabero River, Orinoco basin, Colombia

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 104, Issue 6, Page 1947-1959, June 2024.
Abstract A new species of characid with remarkable sexual characteristics is described from the upper Guayabero River drainage from the Orinoco basin in Colombia. The new species is included in the genus Monotocheirodon by sharing most of the previously proposed diagnostic features of this genus.

Changes in trophic characteristics of two fish species of Astyanax (Teleostei: Characidae) in response to aquatic pollution

open access: yesZoologia (Curitiba), 2019
The trophic plasticity of most fish species of Astyanax Baird & Girard, 1854 in response to environmental changes and resource availability is high.

Inheritance of Trunk Banding in the Tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi Characidae) [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Heredity, 2004
The tetra (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi) exhibits two phenotypes associated with trunk banding. Fish possess either a smoky-gray coloration with two prominent black vertical bands located directly behind the operculum (black tetra) or a lighter coloration and lack these bands (white skirt tetra).

Reproductive biology of Hyphessobrycon eques (Characiformes: Characidae) in Southern Pantanal, Brazil.

open access: yesBrazilian journal of biology = Revista brasleira de biologia, 2019
Population and reproductive aspects allow the knowledge and understanding of population dynamics and the influence of environmental factors, in addition to ensure the success of a species continuity.

Telencephalic eversion in embryos and early larvae of four teleost species

open access: yesEvolution &Development, Volume 26, Issue 2, March 2024.
The telencephalon of ray‐finned fishes undergoes eversion, not evagination as in the rest of vertebrates. We show that the formation of the ventricle followed by a rostro‐caudal telencephalic expansion is key for the formation of an everted telencephalon in teleosts.
