Chromosome characterization in Acestrorhynchinae and Cynopotaminae (Pisces, Characidae)
Journal of Fish Biology, 1985The karyotypes of six species of Acestrorhynchinae (Acestrorhynchus alus, A. lacustris, Oligosarcus hepsetus, O. jenynsii, O. macrolepis and O. pinloi) and of one species of Cynopotaminae (Galeocharax knerii) were studied. The six Acestrorhynchinae species have 2n= 50, while Galeocharax knerii has 2n= 52 chromosomes.

Intromittent Organ in the Genus Monotocheirodon (Characiformes: Characidae)
Copeia, 2006Abstract We herein document intromittent organs in four Peruvian populations of inseminating fishes of the family Characidae, genus Monotocheirodon, which may comprise new species. All females histologically analyzed from these populations, as well as a female of Monotocheirodon pearsoni, had spermatozoa within the ovary, confirming insemination.

A phylogeny of Astyanax (Characiformes: Characidae) in Central and North America
Zootaxa, 2016A phylogeny is presented for 34 species of Astyanax, 27 of them once included within A. aeneus or A. fasciatus in Central America and Mexico, based on 52 morphological characters (mostly osteological, but also pigmentation and meristics), with three outgroups. Monophyly is not supported for A. aeneus s. lat., as Brazilian species such as A. fasciatus s.

Fine structure of the drum muscles of the piranha (serrasalminae, characidae) [PDF]
The anterior and the posterior drum muscles of the piranha resemble each other in all essential fine structural aspects: myofibrils are slender; sarcomeres are short compared with those of other drum muscles; mitochondria, located in the periphery of the fibers, are numerous and show an irregular internal structure; and the sarcoplasmic reticulum is ...
