Taxonomic revision of the genus Anostomoides (Characiformes: Anostomidae)

Zootaxa, 2019
A taxonomic revision of Anostomoides is herein presented based on a comprehensive revision of specimens deposited in fish collections and the literature. The present revision proposes that A. laticeps is a junior synonym of A. atrianalis, while A. passionis is a junior synonym of Leporinus nattereri, and the latter is thus transferred to Anostomoides ...

Reproductive Characteristics of Characiformes

1992
The Characiformes, as defined by Fink and Fink (1981), are a major group of ostariophysean fishes confined to the freshwaters of the Neotropics and Africa. They range in size from miniature, fully mature species under 20 mm standard length (Weitzman and Vari 1988) to species such as the tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) and the dourado (Salminus ...

New early Campanian characiform fishes (Otophysi: Characiformes) from West Texas support a South American origin for known Late Cretaceous characiforms from North America

Cretaceous Research, 2021
Abstract Fossil characiform dentaries from the “Lowerverse locality” in the lower Campanian portion of the Aguja Formation of West Texas represent a rare Late Cretaceous occurrence of characiform fishes in North America. Two morphotypes are represented.

Heterochromatin and karyotype reorganization in fish of the family Anostomidae (Characiformes)

Cytogenetic and Genome Research, 1991
Mitotic chromosomes of four fish species of the family Anostomidae, belonging to the genera Leporinus, Leporellus, and Schizodon, were studied. With 2n = 54 meta- and submetacentric chromosomes, this family appears to be characterized by marked karyotypic stability. Although perceptible differences exist, mainly in

A phylogeny of Astyanax (Characiformes: Characidae) in Central and North America

Zootaxa, 2016
A phylogeny is presented for 34 species of Astyanax, 27 of them once included within A. aeneus or A. fasciatus in Central America and Mexico, based on 52 morphological characters (mostly osteological, but also pigmentation and meristics), with three outgroups. Monophyly is not supported for A. aeneus s. lat., as Brazilian species such as A. fasciatus s.
