Molecular variants in populations of Bryconamericus aff. iheringii (Characiformes, Characidae) in the upper Paraná river basin - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v35i2.11451

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2012
There are evidences that Bryconamericus aff. iheringii represents a species complex. DNA molecular markers have been effective in studies on phylogeny, taxonomy, and identification of cryptic species. In this study, partial sequences of genes of ATPase 6

Divergence times of the Rhoadsia clade (Characiformes: Characidae)

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology, 2022
Abstract The family Characidae is the most diverse group of fishes in the Neotropics with challenging systematics. The three genera Carlana, Parastremma, and Rhoadsia, formerly considered the subfamily Rhoadsiinae, are now included in the subfamily Stethaprioninae.

New cases of supernumerary chromosomes in characiform fishes [PDF]

open access: yesGenetics and Molecular Biology, 1999
Supernumerary chromosomes were described for five species of Neotropical characiform fishes. These extra chromosomes were small, acrocentric and fully heterochromatic in Leporinus friderici from two different localities as well as in Leporinus sp., but metacentric and fully heterochromatic in Cyphocharax modesta and Prochilodus nigricans.

Illustrated list of additions to the ichthyofauna of the Caura River, Venezuela [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2012
Twenty nine species have been added to the annotated checklists of the ichthyofauna of the Caura River Basin, Guiana Shield, Venezuela. Of these, 18 were found in two floodplain lagoons in the lower Caura, corresponding to the orders Characiformes ...

The piranha genome provides molecular insight associated to its unique feeding behavior [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The piranha enjoys notoriety due to its infamous predatory behavior but much is still not understood about its evolutionary origins and the underlying molecular mechanisms for its unusual feeding biology.

Taxonomic revision of Galeocharax (Characiformes: Characidae: Characinae) [PDF]

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology, 2017
ABSTRACT The taxonomy of Galeocharax, a genus of freshwater fishes distributed in most South American cis-Andean river systems, except the rio Negro, rio São Francisco and rio Xingu basins and the eastern drainages of Brazil, is herein revised. A total of 1229 specimens were examined from which 680 had meristic and morphometric data taken. Osteological

First record of Jupiaba acanthogaster (Eigenmann, 1911) (Ostariophysi, Characidae) in the upper Paraná river basin, Brazil [PDF]

open access: yesCheck List, 2020
Jupiaba Zanata, 1997 is a genus with small species within Characidae, identified by a pair of modified bones in the form of spines just anteriorly to pelvic-fin base. The genus is mostly distributed throughout the Amazon drainage, except J. acanthogaster

Cytotaxonomic and evolutionary considerations about karyotipic data of fishes from the Iguaçu River Basin in South of Brazil

open access: yesBrazilian Archives of Biology and Technology, 2007
The cytogenetic data available in the literature about the ichthyofauna of the Iguaçu River basin were analyzed in this review. The ichthyofauna was characterized by the high level of endemism and by the low diversity of species.
