Interface Topology Driven Loss Minimization in Integrated Photonics: THz Ultrahigh‐Q Cavities and Waveguides

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Compact, robust, and ultralow‐loss on‐chip photonic devices are essential for densely integrated photonic chips. Here, the underlying radiation mechanism in topological valley edge states is unveiled and a new methodology of interface topology driven bandgap and wavevector engineering is proposed to thoroughly suppress their radiation losses, thereby ...

Emergent Locomotion in Self‐Sustained, Mechanically Connected Soft Matter Rings

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 37, Issue 26, July 3, 2025.
Thermally fueled, self‐moving twisted rings made from liquid crystal elastomers are investigated. By studying single rings and linked knots, it is shown how autonomous locomotion emerges through coupling between the rings. The movement is programmable via handedness control at connection points, offering insights into collective behavior and ...

Capillary‐Driven 3D Open Fluidic Networks for Versatile Continuous Flow Manipulation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
The capillary‐driven 3D open fluidic networks (OFNs), composed of connected polyhedral frames, enable precise, programmable, and versatile manipulation of unary, binary, and multiple continuous flows in both spatial and temporal dimensions. OFNs represent a significant leap beyond conventional microfluidics, unlocking new possibilities for selective ...

Synthetic Chromatophores for Color and Pattern Morphing Skins

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cephalopods use chromatophore organs (muscle‐actuated pigment sacs) to alter their skin color and pattern. Synthetic chromatophores, which closely mimic the mechano‐optical process found in cephalopods using stimuli‐responsive microscale hydrogel actuators, are reported.
