Oiled Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus melodus) in Eastern Canada

Waterbirds, 2007
Abstract In June 2000, an oiled Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus melodus), part of the endangered eastern Canadian population, was caught and banded, and a second oiled individual was observed at Flat Bay (48°26’N; 58°32’W) in southwestern Newfoundland. These are the first documented cases of oiled Piping Plover in Canada.

Do nest exclosures affect the behaviour of Piping Plovers (Charadriusmelodus melodus) and their predators?

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 2014
Predators are a threat to many ground-nesting shorebirds; however, nest exclosures are a tool used by managers to reduce nest predation. Others have found that nest exclosures increase hatching success, but there has been concern that they may also increase adult mortality and nest abandonment.

Effect of sea-level rise on piping plover (Charadrius melodus) breeding habitat

Biological Conservation, 2011
Abstract Climate change is raising sea levels, threatening many low-lying coastal areas and associated wildlife. We assessed the threat of sea-level rise (SLR) to the breeding habitat of the federally threatened piping plover on the barrier islands of Suffolk County, New York.

A habitat-based population model for the Great Lakes population of the piping plover (Charadrius melodus)

Biological Conservation, 2001
We created a stochastic habitat-based population model to compare the relative effectiveness of potential conservation strategies to increase the endangered Great Lakes population of piping plovers. Initial model parameters were based on an extensive 14-year dataset obtained by annual studies of breeding pairs in Michigan and 6 years of observations of

Flooding affects dispersal decisions in Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) in prairie Canada

The Auk, 2012
ABSTRACT. Flooding can cause widespread nest failure and chick mortality in sandbar-and beach-nesting waterbirds, particularly when human activity has either altered natural hydrology or limited available nesting habitat. Such widespread reproductive failure could increase breeding-season dispersal, leading to the abandonment of established nesting ...
