Holocene mangrove dynamics and sea level changes: records from the Tanzanian coast [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Tanzanian mangrove ecosystems have been, and are presently, influenced by changes in climate and sea level. Fluctuations in these environmental conditions lead to adaptations and changes in ecosystem structure and composition.

Sustainable Plant‐Based Electrodes for Electrocatalytic Conversion of Small Molecules: From Biomass to Functional Electrodes

open access: yesExploration, EarlyView.
This review summarizes recent progress in plant‐based electrodes for small‐molecule electro‐conversion, focusing on synthesis strategies such as carbonization, hydrothermal processing, electrodeposition, and chemical vapor deposition. It highlights the structural features influencing porosity and conductivity, and discusses their applications in water ...

Charring Behaviour of Mass Timber: A Comparison of Thin Intumescent Coatings and Plasterboard

open access: yesFire and Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study compares the charring behaviour of mass timber under varied heating conditions when protected by either different thin intumescent coating types or fire‐rated plasterboard layers. Bench‐scale fire experiments were conducted using the Heat‐Transfer Rate Inducing System (H‐TRIS).

Contribution of Free Fatty Acids to Emulsion Building and Stability: Understanding the Mechanism From the Case Study of a Crude Red Palm Oil (Elaeis guineensis)—Based Emulsion Consumed in Africa and Known as Achu Soup/Sauce Jaune/Ncha

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
In an aqueous alkaline medium, fatty acids (from the hydrolysis of triglycerides or freely present in the oil) are ionised in order to form emulsifiers (carboxylates) which will physically stabilise the prepared emulsion. The higher the free fatty acids content of the oil and alkalinity of the solution, the higher will be the stability of the prepared ...

Chemical Composition, Amino Acids, Phenolic Profiles and Bioavailability of Minerals in Livingstone Potato (Plectranthus esculentus) as Affected by Different Processing Techniques

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
Boiling retained the nutrients and polyphenol compounds in Plectranthus esculentus tubers better than frying or roasting. A bioavailability study showed that the phytates and oxalates in the tuber may not affect the bioavailabilities of calcium, zinc, or iron in Plectranthus esculentus tubers when eaten.

Aloe vera in Food Preservation: Harnessing Bioactive Constituents for Clean‐Label Innovation and Safety Assurance

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
Aloe vera‐derived biopolymers and nanoformulations enhance antimicrobial, antioxidant, and barrier functions in clean‐label edible coatings and films, whereas safety‐critical anthraquinone thresholds and regulatory constraints shape their translational potential.

Promoting Safe Opioid Disposal: Experimental Evidence on Behavioral Messaging With Financial Incentives

open access: yesHealth Economics, Volume 35, Issue 7, Page 1023-1032, July 2026.
ABSTRACT Some patients prescribed opioid pills fail to properly dispose of their unused pills, posing a risk for others. We report results from a pre‐registered field experiment testing whether behaviorally informed reminder cards increase participation in a financial incentive program for returning unused opioid pills among U.S. Veterans.
