Wood Charcoal Analysis in Archaeology

2018
This chapter examines historical and recent methodological developments in the field of wood charcoal analysis (anthracology). A key aim is to outline various approaches to research questions relating to the reconstruction of past vegetation cover, fuel wood use practices and palaeoecology.

Charcoal Sampling Tubes for Organic Vapor Analysis by Gas Chromatography

American Industrial Hygiene Association Journal, 1966
Abstract Variation in efficiency of recovery of organic vapors collected on activated charcoal and desorbed into carbon disulfide, was studied with respect to certain parameters of the process. Chemicals used were methylethyl ketone, toluene, trichloroethylene, butyl acetate, 2-methylcyclobexanol, and styrene.

Charcoal Analysis for Paleoenvironmental Interpretation: A Chemical Assay

Quaternary Research, 1985
A nitric acid digestion and ignition technique developed to measure relative frequencies of charcoal in lake and bog sediments measures the weight of charcoal relative to the dry weight of the sample (percentage charcoal) and gives results comparable to counting of microscopic charcoal.

Charcoal recognition, taphonomy and uses in palaeoenvironmental analysis

Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, 2010
Abstract Charcoal, predominantly the product of wildfires, is abundant in many sedimentary rocks deposited in a wide range of environments, from terrestrial to marine. It also occurs in some volcanic rocks. This paper outlines aspects of charcoal formation (both natural and experimental) and briefly considers the taphonomic processes leading to a ...
