Investigation of chatter marks on ground surfaces by means of optical methods

Optics and Lasers in Engineering, 2011
Abstract In order to characterise chatter marks, in this work, various ground samples are investigated by means of two different optical surface analysis techniques: by using a confocal white light microscope and an angle-resolved light scattering sensor, respectively.

Identification of Machining Chatter Marks on Surfaces of Automotive Valve Seats

Journal of Manufacturing Science and Engineering, 2011
In this paper, we propose a method for inspecting machining chatter marks on automotive valve seats using image processing technique. Chatter or self-excited tool-workpiece relative vibration is unacceptable in the machining processes of valve seats, because it causes poor surface finish and can create internal leaks in the engine.

Mechanism of the Strip Surface Chatter Marks with 1220 Cold Rolling Mill

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014
Aiming at a 1220 strip surface, where the Cold Rolling Mill had chatter marks, on which the reasons for the formation was tracked tested for in-depth study. Based on the vibration test, the analysis was given to the dynamic characteristics of the rack [1-3].

Analysis of chatter marks damage on the Yankee dryer surface of a tissue machine

Engineering Failure Analysis, 2012
A tissue machine suffering from Yankee chatter marks has been experimentally investigated. A series of vibration measurements during normal operation at various Yankee speeds on both the creping and the cleaning blade holders have been carried out. The analysis in a frequency range up to 20 kHz has permitted to identify speed dependent frequency peaks ...

Chatter Marks and Vibration Analysis in a S6-High Cold Rolling Mill

2013
S6-high rolling mill is an advanced mode to work the steel: it allows the use of very small work rolls laterally guided by individually adjustable side support rolls, which are supported by two rows of roller bearings mounted in cassettes. In this paper the vibrations generated in a S6-high cold rolling mill are analyzed with the aim to investigate the

Model-Based Identification of Chatter Marks during Cylindrical Grinding [PDF]

open access: possible, 2013
The following paper presents an online model-based monitoring algorithm that identifies and quantifies the level of waviness caused by grinding chatter exploiting accelerations measured on the machine. A Weighted Least Squares method has been applied in the frequency domain that leads to a clear interpretation of the forcing effect caused by the ...

Characteristics of Two Dimensional Surface Roughness — Taking Self-Excited Chatter Marks as Objective

CIRP Annals, 1981
Summary This paper is concerned with how to display effectively 2D surface roughness, which was measured by using light sectioning method and by taking self-excited chatter marks as objective. The marks due to chatter which was mainly caused for work and tool respectively are taken.

Relationship between chatter marks and rolling force fluctuation for twenty-high roll mill

Engineering Failure Analysis, 2015
Abstract Chatter marks on the surface of a rolled steel strip may seriously affect the final product quality. It is still difficult to discover the generation mechanism of chatter marks and develop an effective method to identify chatter marks. In this paper a rolling force fluctuation model is proposed based on the variation of the rolling force ...

Chatter marks reduction in meso-scale milling through ultrasonic vibration assistance parallel to tooling’s axis

International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing, 2012
Recently, vibration assistance has been mainly applied to feed and cross-feed directions for milling processes. This paper investigates the effect of ultrasonic vibration assistance in tooling’s axial direction for improvement of machined surface with reduction of chatter marks.
