Are Hibernators Toast? Global Climate Change and Prolonged Seasonal Hibernation. [PDF]

open access: yesGlob Chang Biol
This review examines how global climate change impacts mammalian hibernators, emphasizing physiological, ecological and phenological aspects. Many hibernating species already inhabit extreme environments, thus are at risk as climate variability intensifies.

Meta-analysis of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class IIA reveals polymorphism and positive selection in many vertebrate species. [PDF]

open access: yesMol Ecol, 2022
Abstract Pathogen‐mediated selection and sexual selection are important drivers of evolution. Both processes are known to target genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), a gene family encoding cell‐surface proteins that display pathogen peptides to the immune system.

Predicting the potential distribution change of the endangered Francois' langur (Trachypithecus francoisi) across its entire range in China under climate change. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
This study shows the potential suitable habitat of Francois' langur in China under current and future climates using maximum entropy models. The habitat prediction and the main drivers proposed in this study can provide essential insights for the future conservation of this endangered species.

Human‐modified landscapes driving the global primate extinction crisis

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 29, Issue 20, Page 5775-5787, October 2023., 2023
This article investigates the impact of human‐induced changes on primate species worldwide. It examines how various human‐altered landscapes affect threatened and non‐threatened primate species with declining and stable populations. The study finds that activities like expanding pasture lands, human footprint, and road infrastructure negatively affect ...

A surprising haven: The biodiversity of an old‐growth forest amidst a scorched landscape in Madagascar

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, Volume 5, Issue 9, September 2023., 2023
This research note highlights the conservation and scientific potential of an isolated humid forest in south‐central Madagascar, Ivohiboro Humid Forest. We summarize the results from biological surveys of the area for vertebrates and vascular plants.

Diversification processes in Gerp's mouse lemur demonstrate the importance of rivers and altitude as biogeographic barriers in Madagascar's humid rainforests

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 7, July 2023., 2023
We reconstructed the phylogeographic history of Gerp's mouse lemur (Microcebus gerpi) in Madagascar's humid rainforests. Ecological niche models and genomic results jointly suggest that rivers acted as biogeographic barriers depending on both their size and the elevation of headwaters.

Habitat and ecological niche characteristics of the elusive Hairy‐eared Dwarf Lemur (Allocebus trichotis) with updated occurrence and geographic range data

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Primatology, Volume 85, Issue 4, April 2023., 2023
Area of occupancy of the Hairy‐eared Dwarf lemur (Allocebus trichotis) in Madagascar. This has been inferred from ecological niche modeling based on a literature review supplemented with 23 new occurrence localities. Abstract Ecological niche modeling (ENM) is particularly useful in the study of cryptic and elusive species that are only rarely seen ...

Locomotor adaptations in the Early Miocene species Diamantomys luederitzi (Rodentia, Mammalia) from Uganda (Napak)

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 284, Issue 3, March 2023., 2023
This work highlights morphological variations in skulls and humerus in extant rodents with varying locomotion, to predict this parameter in the extinct species Diamantomys luederitzi (Early Miocene, Napak, Uganda). The use of LDA and phylogenetic flexible discriminant analyses with different data sets (measurements and landmarks) allow a better ...

Filarial infections in lemurs: Evidence for a wide geographical distribution and low host specificity among lemur species

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Primatology, Volume 85, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
A microscopic analysis of 942 blood smears from Microcebus murinus, M. ravelobensis and two rodent species from northwestern Madagascar revealed the presence of an unnamed Onchocercidae species with low prevalence (1.0%−2.1%) in both mouse lemur species, but not in the rodents.
