The water quality on recreational beaches is constantly monitored. However, given that beachgoers often spend more time in contact with the sand than the seawater, it is essential to also regularly assess beach sand quality. In this study, 34 beach sand samples were collected in seven locations along the south shore of the Baltic Sea (Europe) between ...

A chemical treatment regimen to reduce bacterial contamination in dental waterlines
The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1997This article describes a pilot study in which the authors used aerobic bacterial cultures to compare the effects of 1:10 mouthwash, 1:20 mouthwash and 2 percent ethanol in reservoir systems with seven conventional water systems. The long-term, low-concentration antiseptic reduced bacteria to within acceptable limits.

Chemical Sterilization of Bacterially Contaminated Bone Without Destruction of Osteogenic Potential
Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, 1989A method to sterilize bone that has been contaminated or to assure sterility of allografts would be quite useful in the practice of orthopedics. The literature documents the osteogenic potential of demineralized bone matrix, prepared by treatment with hydrochloric acid and ethanol. We became interested in whether these potent antibacterial agents could

Soil Contamination Detected Using Bacterial and Plant Mutagenicity Tests and Chemical Analyses
Environmental Research, 2002Soil contaminants are common in industrialized countries, causing widespread contamination directly of soil and indirectly of ground water and food. Among these pollutants particular attention should be paid to soil mutagens and carcinogens due to their potentially hazardous effects on animal populations and human health.
