Superconductivity and Chemical Bonding in Mercury
Angewandte Chemie International Edition, 1998Band structure and Fermi surface calculations were performed for the metal mercury, for which superconductivity was discovered 87 years ago. The electronic properties of mercury were analyzed to find the origin of singlet electron pair formation and condensation which leads to superconductivity.

Orbital Overlap and Chemical Bonding
Chemistry – A European Journal, 2006AbstractThe chemical bonds in the diatomic molecules Li2–F2 and Na2–Cl2 at different bond lengths have been analyzed by the energy decomposition analysis (EDA) method using DFT calculations at the BP86/TZ2P level. The interatomic interactions are discussed in terms of quasiclassical electrostatic interactions ΔEelstat, Pauli repulsion ΔEPauli and ...

Chemical-bond spectroscopy with neutrons
Physical Review A, 1986Calculations are made of the double-differential cross section for incoherent neutron scattering from a hydrogen atom involved in a chemical bond. Processes are investigated which correspond to the excitation of successive vibrational states of the bound hydrogen atom leading eventually to a dissociation of the bond.

Bond Paths Are Not Chemical Bonds
The Journal of Physical Chemistry A, 2009This account takes to task papers that criticize the definition of a bond path as a criterion for the bonding between the atoms it links by mistakenly identifying it with a chemical bond. It is argued that the notion of a chemical bond is too restrictive to account for the physics underlying the broad spectrum of interactions between atoms and ...

The source of chemical bonding
Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, 2014Developments in the application of quantum mechanics to the understanding of the chemical bond are traced with a view to examining the evolving conception of the covalent bond. Beginning with the first quantum mechanical resolution of the apparent paradox in Lewis's conception of a shared electron pair bond by Heitler and London, the ensuing account ...

Chemical Bonding 2: Modern Theories of Chemical Bonding
2021Abstract Chemical Bonding II: Modern Theories of Chemical Bonding explains four bonding theories related to molecular geometry and bonding. Lewis structures and the Valence-Shell Electron-Pair Repulsion (VSEPR) model are used to describe and predict the electron group geometry, molecular geometry and shapes of molecules.

"SOMETIMES IT SEEMS to me that a bond between two atoms has become so real, so tangible, so friendly, that I can almost see it. Then I awake with a little shock, for a chemical bond is not a real thing. It does not exist. No one has ever seen one. No one ever can. It is a figment of our own imagination.
