Effect of Corexit 9500A on Mississippi Canyon crude oil weathering patterns using artificial and natural seawater

open access: yesHeliyon, 2017
During the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil well blowout in the Northern Gulf of Mexico (GoM), the application of 6.97 million litres of chemical dispersants was used at the well-head and on the sea surface to promote oil degradation and weathering of the ...

Exploration of marine bacterioplankton community assembly mechanisms during chemical dispersant and surfactant‐assisted oil biodegradation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2021
Assembly processes in marine microbial communities amended with crude oil and chemical dispersant are poorly understood and even more so when biosurfactants are used.

2018 State-of the Science of Dispersants and Dispersed Oil (DDO) in U.S. Arctic Waters: Eco-Toxicity and Sublethal Impacts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Chemical dispersants were employed on an unprecedented scale during the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and could be a response option should a large spill occur in Arctic waters. The use of dispersants in response to that spill raised

High‐Concentration Mesogen‐Assisted Exfoliation of Low‐Dimensional Nanomaterials for Achieving Ultralow‐Temperature Actuations of Liquid Crystal Elastomers

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Most matter is nominally frozen in the polar regions or space, and liquid crystal materials are no exception. Consequently, soft actuators, including liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs), are inoperative under such extreme cold in response to stimuli, as their motion relies on mechanical deformation.

Facile Strategy for Mass Production of Pt Catalysts for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells Using Low-Energy Electron Beam

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2020
There are so many variables affecting the large-scale chemical synthesis of nanoparticles that mass production remains a challenge. Here, using a high-efficiency compact electron beam generator irradiating a low-energy electron beam, we fabricate carbon ...

A Termite‐Inspired Alternative to Cement

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A termite‐inspired composite of clay, cellulose, and lignin forms a dense fibrous network with concrete‐like strength (32 MPa) and superior elasticity, processed at ambient temperature. Abstract Clay combined with organic materials is used by termites as a strong and durable construction material for their mounds with minimal environmental impact. Here,

Chemical dispersants and quantification textural fractions by Bouyoucos and pipette methods

open access: yesActa Agronómica, 2015
An adequate individualization of particles is required for a correct granulometric analysis in order to quantify the real percent composition of particles in the soil. The aim of this study was to compare the percent of granulometric fractions determined

Rational Design of Printable Carbon Nanotube Transparent Conductive Films via Data‐Driven and Mechanistic Insights

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A machine learning and simulation‐guided strategy is demonstrated for gentle, non‐sonication dispersion of carbon nanotubes, preserving structural integrity and performance. This approach enables transparent conductive films with low sheet resistance, high transmittance, and sub‐20 µm printability.
