Chameleon sequences reveal structural effects in proteins representing micelle‐like distribution of hydrophobicity

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Amino acids sequence of two different proteins with the same sequence (chameleon sequence—black boxes) represent in 3D structure of the proteins different secondary structures: HHHH—helical and BBB—Beta‐structural. The chains folded in water environment adopt different III‐order structures in which the chameleon fragments appear to adopt similar status

The engineering behind the mechanical properties enhancement on HSLA steels, microalloyed with niobium: Effects of boron and titanium

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2020
The influence of boron on the mechanical properties of niobium microalloyed steels was investigated by comparing the variations of rolled strips with and without boron and titanium addition.

Investigating the qualities of water that are used in our school environment with respect to the amounts of calcium and magnesium ions and the levels of hardness, by performing complexiometric titrations with EDTA (Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
As well as it’s known, water is essential for life. A person can live for about one week without eating anything but he/she cannot survive even that long without drinking water.

Analysing the significance of small conformational changes and low occupancy states in serial crystallographic data

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This protocol paper outlines methods to establish the success of a time‐resolved serial crystallographic experiment, by means of statistical analysis of timepoint data in reciprocal space and models in real space. We show how to amplify the signal from excited states to visualise structural changes in successful experiments.

Hardness Profiles of Some 1,2-Hydrogen Shift Reactions

open access: yes, 1995
Ab initio SCF/6-31G** calculations are performed on the 1,Zhydrogen shift reaction in some HAB molecules and HAB+ ions (AB = CN, SiN, BO, A10, BS, AlS, BeF, CO, SiO, CS, N2) in order to test the validity of the maximum hardness principle. The hardness is

The skills required for transition to university and study in biological sciences: A student perspective

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Bioscience students were asked for their opinions on the value and teaching of skills. 204 responded that teamwork, time management and study skills are necessary to reach University, that scientific writing, research, laboratory and presentation skills are taught effectively during their studies, while other skills are gained inherently through study ...

Why human connection is the true metric of research success

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human‐centred mentorship can be shaped by mentor attributes, actions, intrinsic drive and career ambition. Drawing on reflections across Singapore and France, as well as workshop insights from FEBS‐IUBMB ENABLE 2024, this article shows that human‐centred mentorship creates the conditions for sustainable growth, well‐being and retention in research ...

Optimizing photoactivation of PA‐mCherry for optical pooled CRISPR screens

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Photoactivatable PA‐mCherry finds widespread use to optically tag individual cells. However, confocal 405 nm UV laser‐scanning (normal scan) is much less efficient than widefield UV illumination, limiting the use of PA‐mCherry on confocal instruments. We remedy this limitation by reporting that rapid and repeated confocal scanning with a low‐intensity,
