A pre-validation trial - testing genotoxicity of several chemicals using standard, medium- and high-throughput comet formats.

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2015
As part of the EU-project COMICS, high throughput versions of the comet assay was developed. In order to test the performance of the new formats; the novel 12-gel slide and the 96-minigel film were compared with standard 3-gel slides for their ability to

Strategy for Cost-Effective Reduction of the Sum of Health Risk Estimates for Exposures to Mixtures of Toxic Substances [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
The authors argue that a minimization approach can provide guidance for effective use of funds to reduce the sum of estimated risks or the upper limit of the sum of risk estimates for mixtures of ...

In situ molecular organization and heterogeneity of the Legionella Dot/Icm T4SS

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We present a nearly complete in situ model of the Legionella Dot/Icm type IV secretion system, revealing its central secretion channel and identifying new components. Using cryo‐electron tomography with AI‐based modeling, our work highlights the structure, variability, and mechanism of this complex nanomachine, advancing understanding of bacterial ...

Dumping in the Global Dixie: Circle of Poison and the Contamination of the Global South

open access: yesGlobal Environment
The 1981 publication of David Weir and Mark Shapiro’s exposé Circle of Poison almost ten years after the banning of DDT represented how the landscape of understandings about hazardous chemicals and their regulation had changed.

Chemical Contaminants Associated with Palm Wine from Nigeria Are Potential Food Safety Hazards

open access: yesBeverages, 2017
Recent analysis of palm wine, a traditional drink fermented mainly by yeasts, revealed the presence of several chemicals that were not products of yeast fermentation. The chemicals included styrene, benzene, trimethyldioxolane, dichloromethane, methylene

Potential for Chemical Repellents Against the Mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae to Prevent Infestation of Country Hams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Shrank), commonly known as the ham mite, is a cosmopolitan pest found of various stored food commodities, including aged hams and cheeses (Amoah et al. 2017; Campbell et al. 2017).

Synthetic Chemotaxis and Collective Behavior in Active Matter

open access: yes, 2018
Conspectus: The ability to navigate in chemical gradients, called chemotaxis, is crucial for the survival of microorganisms. It allows them to find food and to escape from toxins.

Sequence determinants of RNA G‐quadruplex unfolding by Arg‐rich regions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We show that Arg‐rich peptides selectively unfold RNA G‐quadruplexes, but not RNA stem‐loops or DNA/RNA duplexes. This length‐dependent activity is inhibited by acidic residues and is conserved among SR and SR‐related proteins (SRSF1, SRSF3, SRSF9, U1‐70K, and U2AF1).

Long-term analysis of drinking water quality in poultry and pig farms in Northwest Germany

open access: yesFrontiers in Animal Science
Hygienically safe drinking water is essential for the health, well-being, and efficient production of livestock. In contrast to drinking water for human consumption, there are guidelines but no legal limits for drinking water for animals.

A screening method for ranking chemicals by their fate and behaviour in the environment and potential toxic effects in humans following non-occupational exposure [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
A large number of chemicals are released intentionally or unintentionally into the environment each year. These include thousands of substances that are currently listed worldwide and several hundred new substances added annually (Mücke et al., 1986 ...
