Zooplankton and Picocyanobacteria Contribute Characteristic Size Ranges of Organic Particles to Different Layers of the Anoxic Water Column

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 39, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Oxygen deficient zones (ODZs) are key areas of nitrogen loss, a process dependent on organic matter. Understanding the sources of organic matter in the ODZ is necessary to predict how biogeochemical cycles will respond to ocean changes. Size fractionated (5–20, 20–53, 53–180, 180–500, >500 μm) particulate organic C and N (POM) concentration ...

Nutrient Acquisition, Rather Than Stress Response Over Diel Cycles, Drives Microbial Transcription in a Hyper-Arid Namib Desert Soil

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2019
Hot desert surface soils are characterized by extremely low water activities for large parts of any annual cycle. It is widely assumed that microbial processes in such soils are very limited.

Riparian Processes in Semi‐Arid Landscapes: Understanding Controls on Nitrate Loss and Sulfate Production in Agricultural Stream Corridors

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Biogeosciences, Volume 130, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract Relative to their limited areal extent, riparian ecosystems are disproportionately important in regulating inorganic solute export from agricultural landscapes. We investigated spatial patterns of solute concentrations in surface and ground waters of stream corridors to infer the dominant hydrologic transport and biogeochemical pathways that ...

Trait‐Based Life History Strategies Shape Bacterial Niche Breadth

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 20, May 29, 2025.
This study investigates bacterial niche breadth through a large‐scale soil survey and over 2000 bacterial genomes. It identifies key life‐history traits—growth, competition, stress tolerance, resource acquisition, and dispersal—that correlate with niche breadth.

Deep-sea corals near cold seeps associate with sulfur-oxidizing chemoautotrophs in the family Ca. Thioglobaceae

open access: yesMicrobiome
Background Corals are known for their symbiotic relationships, yet there is limited evidence of chemoautotrophic associations. This is despite some corals occurring near cold seeps where chemosymbiotic fauna abound including mussels that host sulfur ...

Chemolithoautotrophic production mediating the cycling of the greenhouse gases N2O and CH4 in an upwelling ecosystem [PDF]

open access: yesBiogeosciences, 2009
The high availability of electron donors occurring in coastal upwelling ecosystems with marked oxyclines favours chemoautotrophy, in turn leading to high N2O and CH4 cycling associated with aerobic NH4+ (AAO) and CH4 oxidation (AMO).

Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Lateral Carbon Dynamics at an Eroding Yedoma Permafrost Site in Siberia (Duvanny Yar)

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 2, February 2025.
Rapid warming of the Arctic is accelerating permafrost (frozen ground) thaw and releasing previously frozen organic matter into streams and rivers. At an abruptly thawing permafrost site in Siberia (Duvanny Yar), we show that permafrost thaw streams and their outflow waters to the Kolyma River release greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

Dark carbon fixation in stream carbon cycling

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, Volume 69, Issue S1, Page S32-S41, December 2024.
Abstract Headwater streams are often characterized by turbulence, organic matter inputs from terrestrial systems, net heterotrophy, and the microbial loop supplying carbon and energy for consumers. However, ecological models overlook dark carbon fixation (DCF), the light‐independent inorganic carbon uptake, mainly based on chemosynthesis, using energy ...

High potential for temperate viruses to drive carbon cycling in chemoautotrophy‐dominated shallow‐water hydrothermal vents

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, 2017
Summary Viruses are the most abundant life forms in the world's oceans and they are key drivers of biogeochemical cycles, but their impact on the microbial assemblages inhabiting hydrothermal vent ecosystems is still largely unknown.

Bacterial chemoautotrophic reoxidation in sub-Arctic sediments: a seasonal study in Kobbefjord, Greenland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Anoxic mineralization of organic matter releases dissolved inorganic carbon and produces reduced mineralization products. The reoxidation of these reduced compounds is essential for biogeochemical cycling in sediments and is mainly performed by ...
