Genome‐Wide Association Analysis of Hippocampal Neuroplasticity as an Indicator of Stress Responsiveness in Laying Hens (Gallus gallus domesticus)

open access: yesAnimal Genetics, Volume 57, Issue 5, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Environmental stressors in commercial poultry systems can negatively affect bird welfare, although individuals vary considerably in their responses. Neuroplasticity within the hippocampus, measured through the density of doublecortin‐positive (DCX+) neurons, provides a potential biomarker of stress experience in laying hens.

Fire Performance and Flame‐Retardant Behavior of Epoxy Resin Modified With Fly Ash and Aluminum Trihydrate

open access: yesApplied Research, Volume 5, Issue 5, October 2026.
Fly ash (FA) and aluminium trihydrate (ATH) were incorporated into epoxy to enhance fire performance. Increasing FA content delayed ignition and reduced heat release, while the FA with ATH combination significantly improved thermal protection, extending the time for coated steel to reach 100°C from 183 to 646 s.

How wildlife respond to tropical cyclones: short‐term tactics and long‐term impacts

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2081-2102, October 2026.
ABSTRACT From butterflies to lizards and from sharks to seabirds, wildlife exhibit tactics to survive the impacts of tropical cyclones, also known as hurricanes, cyclones, or typhoons depending on where they occur. Some species seek refuge during the storm by moving, some remain in place and ride it out, and others move longer distances, avoiding the ...

Loss, persistence and reversal of phenotypic traits

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2119-2133, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The irreversibility of complex trait loss has long been a tenet of evolutionary biology. However, this idea is increasingly at odds with the numerous documented exceptions across the Tree of Life. We synthesise this growing body of evidence across a diverse array of taxa and traits, exploring the evolutionary conditions that enable ...

Trade‐offs in avian parental care: a review of theory and meta‐analysis of brood size manipulations

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2337-2358, October 2026.
ABSTRACT The selective forces shaping parental care have been studied for over 50 years. While theoretical and experimental work has yielded qualitative progress, the large body of empirical work testing predictions about parental investment based on life‐history trade‐offs has yet to be synthesized.

Building phenotypic character matrices for phylogenetic inference: exploration of 35 years of practice

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2379-2407, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Recent methodological development in phylogenetic inference has focused predominantly on molecular data. However, renewed interest in other data types, particularly morphological data, has followed from the increased recognition of the power of total evidence and tip‐dating approaches, including fossil data, for inference of time‐scaled trees ...
