Biosorption of phenol by chicken feathers
Environmental Engineering and Policy, 1999This work aimed at exploring the potential use of chicken feathers as a biosorbent for the removal of phenol from aqueous solutions. Batch kinetics and isotherm studies were performed to evaluate the effects of process parameters such as pH, temperature, initial phenol concentration, and sorbent concentration.

A Feather-Trap System for the Removal of Chicken Feathers from Laboratory Sewage
Avian Diseases, 1992A simple feather-trap system is described for use on the drain lines of buildings housing poultry for research or other purposes where floors are frequently washed. The trap uses disposable plastic-mesh bags that can efficiently remove almost all feathers from the water, preventing sewer lines from being blocked by compacted feathers.

A Preliminary Investigation of Piezoelectric Effects in Chicken Feathers
IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1970Piezoelectric effects have been measured experimentally in chicken feathers. Quill sections subjected to alternating electric stress respond with an axial twisting motion that has a well-defined resonant mode. Conversely, subjecting the quill to mechanical stress produced an electrical signal.

The contribution of feathers in the spread of chicken anemia virus
Virus Research, 2008Chicken anemia virus (CAV) spreads vertically and horizontally, however, the process is mostly still obscure. To further clarify the horizontal CAV spread, we examined the contribution of feathers. We demonstrated that CAV could be amplified from DNA purified from feather shafts of experimentally infected chicks, and the process efficacy was evaluated ...

Feather Lesions in Cyclophosphamide-Treated Chickens
Avian Diseases, 1981One-day-old White Leghorn chickens each treated with 4 mg of cyclophosphamide for 3 consecutive days developed feather lesions 4 days after treatment. The lesions were characterized by short feathers with an absence of barbs mainly in the proximal portion and sometimes in the mid- or distal portion of the rachis.

Biosorption of precious metal ions by chicken feather
Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology, 1996Chicken feather (C-feather) is an intricate network of stable and water-insoluble protein fibers with high surface area and is an abundant bioresource. C-feather protein was found to accumulate various precious metal ions (gold and platinum metals) selectively from their dilute aqueous solutions in high yield and in short contact time, depending on pH ...

Effects of feathers on instrumental thermoregulatory behavior in chickens
Physiology & Behavior, 1978Abstract Experiments with domestic fowl confirm that normally feathered chickens utilize species-specific behavior and autonomic responses to cold (at least to−5°C) rather than initiate an instrumental response. When the thermally insulative feathers are removed chickens readily utilize the instrumental response and are able to maintain physiological

Valorisation of chicken feathers: Characterisation of chemical properties
Waste Management, 2017The characterisation of the chemical properties of the whole chicken feather and its fractions (barb and rachis), was undertaken to identify opportunities for valorizing this waste product. The authors have described the physical, morphological, mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of the chicken feathers and related them to potential ...

Identifying the Ptilopody (Feathered Shank) Loci of the Chicken
Journal of Heredity, 1992A series of crosses was made involving lightly-, and heavily-, and non-feather-shanked chickens in an attempt to clear up the confusion in the literature concerning the inheritance of feathered shanks in chickens. The Langshan and Brahma breeds were both shown to possess the same single shank-feathering locus, but because of their differences in ...

Development of Chicken De-Feathering Machine
FUTA JOURNAL OF ENGINEERING AND ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY, 2019This paper presents the design and fabrication of an electrically-operated chicken de-feathering machine using stainless steel, mild steel, elastomer feather pluckers and electric motor as major materials. The electric motor drives the feather plate (to which the feather pluckers are attached) on which the chicken carcass is placed hence spinning the ...
