Co-infection with Chikungunya virus alters trafficking of pathogenic CD8(+) T cells into the brain and prevents Plasmodium-induced neuropathology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Arboviral diseases have risen significantly over the last 40 years, increasing the risk of co‐infection with other endemic disease such as malaria. However, nothing is known about the impact arboviruses have on the host response toward heterologous ...

Hepatitis E Virus ORF1 Polyprotein Harbors a Pocket‐Like Cavity That Is Vital for Virus Replication and Represents a Novel Antiviral Target

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 47, December 18, 2025.
Within the hepatitis E virus (HEV) ORF1 polyprotein, the X domain interacts with viral RNA‐dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), forming a functional “pocket‐like” cavity (PC) that is crucial for viral replication. Structure‐based screening, surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays, and HEV model validation collectively identify saikosaponin D and ...

Deep mutationally scanned CHIKV E3/E2 virus library maps viral amino acid preferences and predicts viral escape mutants of neutralizing CHIKV antibodies

open access: yesJournal of Virology
ABSTRACT As outbreaks of chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a mosquito-borne alphavirus, continue to present public health challenges, additional research is needed to generate protective and safe vaccines and effective therapeutics.

Targeting functional RNA structures in CHIKV and ZIKV

open access: yesAccess Microbiology, 2019
Emerging arboviruses such as Zika virus (ZIKV) and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) represent a significant threat to human health and have a high potential to cause outbreaks in the near future. At present, there are no specific antivirals available for either of these important pathogens, despite the wide global prevalence of their vector, Aedes spp ...

Cross-Neutralizing Anti-Chikungunya and Anti-Dengue 2 IgG Antibodies from Patients and BALB/c Mice against Dengue and Chikungunya Viruses

open access: yesViruses
Dengue (DENV) and Chikungunya (CHIKV) viruses can be transmitted simultaneously by Aedes mosquitoes, and there may be co-infections in humans. However, how the adaptive immune response is modified in the host has yet to be known entirely.

A Single Mutation in Chikungunya Virus Affects Vector Specificity and Epidemic Potential

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2007
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an emerging arbovirus associated with several recent large-scale epidemics. The 2005–2006 epidemic on Reunion island that resulted in approximately 266,000 human cases was associated with a strain of CHIKV with a mutation in ...

Identification of TPRA1 as a Novel Receptor and Predictive Biomarker for Oncolytic Virus M1

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 12, Issue 48, December 29, 2025.
This study identifies transmembrane protein adipocyte‐associated 1 (TPRA1) as a novel receptor for oncolytic virus M1 (OVM). TPRA1's ectodomain binds OVM particles, while its intracellular domain facilitates virus internalization, promoting efficient viral entry.

Seroprevalence of Chikungunya Virus after Its Emergence in Brazil. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Chikungunya has had a substantial impact on public health because of the magnitude of its epidemics and its highly debilitating symptoms. We estimated the seroprevalence, proportion of symptomatic cases, and proportion of chronic form of disease after ...

Advanced Electrochemical Genosensor for Zika Virus Detection in Biological Samples Based on Cysteamine‐Graphene Quantum Dots Bilayer

open access: yesElectroanalysis, Volume 37, Issue 12, December 2025.
An electrochemical biosensor for Zika virus (ZIKV) detection is described. A DNA probe was immobilized on a gold electrode. After hybridization with the target (ZIKV), safranin was used as an intercalating indicator. Detection was performed by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV), where the current signal increases with the target concentration.

Identification of immunogenic and cross-reactive chikungunya virus epitopes for CD4+ T cells in chronic chikungunya disease

open access: yesNature Communications
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a mosquito-borne alphavirus, causes acute febrile illness that can progress into chronic arthritis-like disease (CHIKVD) in humans.
