Gide’s Voyage of Urien is a tale of such apparent transparency that the commentator is constantly tempted to provide simple interpretations that then turn out to be so simplistic as to miss the point. The novella is cast in the traditional form of the imaginary voyage that is the reflection of an inner Odyssey. The symbols are equally traditional.
