HEMATOLOGY AND PLASMA BIOCHEMISTRY REFERENCE INTERVALS FOR FREE-LIVING ADULT CHIMANGO CARACARA (MILVAGO CHIMANGO) DURING THE NONBREEDING SEASON

Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine, 2023
Hematological and blood biochemistry values are useful in assessing the physiological, nutritional, and overall health status of captive and free-living wildlife. For the chimango caracara (Milvago chimango), the most common raptor species in Argentina, reference intervals (RIs) for hematology and blood biochemistry are lacking.

Neophobia is negatively related to reversal learning ability in females of a generalist bird of prey, the Chimango Caracara, Milvago chimango

Animal Cognition, 2017
In an ever-changing environment, the ability to adapt choices to new conditions is essential for daily living and ultimately, for survival. Behavioural flexibility allows animals to maximise survival and reproduction in novel settings by adjusting their behaviour based on specific information and feedback acquired in their current environments. However,

The Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango), an additional fisher among Caracarini falcons [PDF]

open access: yesBiota Neotropica, 2009
The Caracarini falcons are among the most versatile birds of prey, and their variable diet includes fishes, which may be taken as carrion. However, fishing behaviour is described for two species. Here we describe the Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango) fishing at an estuary in Chile, Pacific coast of South America.

Experimental assessment of problem solving by Milvago chimango (Aves: Falconiformes)

Journal of Ethology, 2007
We report a preliminary assessment of problem solving as an estimate of behavioural innovation and learning ability of a generalist and abundant raptor, Milvago chimango, under controlled conditions in aviaries. Experimental tests consisted in presentation of a Plexiglas box with four lids leading to isolated pieces of meat.

Natal dispersal and philopatry of Chimango Caracaras (Milvago chimango) in suburban, rural and natural habitats, determined by band recovery and re-sighting data

Emu - Austral Ornithology, 2017
ABSTRACTNatal dispersal is a process whereby birds move from their birthplace to the site of their first attempt at reproduction. This process has strong implications for the dynamics and genetic structure of populations. However, studies on the dispersal of neotropical birds of prey are scarce.
