BIZARRE chimpanzees do not represent “the chimpanzee”

Behavioral and Brain Sciences, 2010
AbstractHenrich et al. convincingly caution against the overgeneralization of findings from particular human populations, but fail to apply their own compelling reasoning to our nearest living relatives, the great apes. Here we argue that rearing history is every bit as important for understanding cognition in other species as it is in humans.

Cultures in chimpanzees

Nature, 1999
As an increasing number of field studies of chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) have achieved long-term status across Africa, differences in the behavioural repertoires described have become apparent that suggest there is significant cultural variation. Here we present a systematic synthesis of this information from the seven most long-term studies, which ...

Autonomy in chimpanzees

Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics, 2014
Literature on the mental capacities and cognitive mechanisms of the great apes has been silent about whether they can act autonomously. This paper provides a philosophical theory of autonomy supported by psychological studies of the cognitive mechanisms that underlie chimpanzee behavior to argue that chimpanzees can act autonomously even though their ...

Chimpanzees and death [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, 2018
Information about responses to death in nonhuman primates is important for evolutionary thanatology. This paper reviews the major causes of death in chimpanzees, and how these apes respond to cues related to dying and death. Topics covered include disease, human activities, predation, accidents and intra-species aggression and cannibalism.

“Conservations” with a chimpanzee

Developmental Psychobiology, 1983
AbstractTwo chimpanzees (Pan tryglodytes), Fanny and Jane, were presented with liquid and number conservation problems. One chimpanzee, Jane, was successful in solving both sets of problems in that she was not distracted by irrelevant transformations, being influenced only by changes in quantity.

Melioidosis in a Chimpanzee

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1971
SUMMARY Melioidosis was diagnosed in a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes). The clinical history was one of gradual general degeneration of health, multiple abscesses, and pulmonary radiographic densities. The pathologic changes in the lungs, liver, and bone were similar to those reported for man.

Chimpanzees and Retirement

Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science, 1999
The subject of sanctuaries for chimpanzees has lately become the topic of a great deal of discussion (Brent, Butler, & Haberstroh, 1997; Committee on Long-Term Care of Chimpanzees, 1997; Dyke, Williams-Blangero, Mamelka, & Goodwin, 1995; Peterson & Goodall, 1993).
