Complex anthropogenic interaction on vegetation greening in the Chinese Loess Plateau

Science of The Total Environment, 2021
Vegetation greening steered by land use management in the Chinese Loess Plateau has been widely reported, however studies that quantitatively assessing and explicitly linking the anthropogenic forcing on vegetation greening and browning are scarce. Here in this study, we calculate the increment and rate of change of fractional vegetation cover (FVC ...

Variation in dustfall on the western Chinese Loess Plateau

Arabian Journal of Geosciences, 2020
Dustfall samples from the western Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) were collected from 2013 to 2016 at Jiuzhoutai for dustfall variation analysis. Results showed that the seasonal dustfall variations were non-significant in the region, indicating dustfall sources with inconsistent patterns largely contributed to the modern loess formation.

A hybrid mechanism for the initiation and expansion of loess caves across the Chinese Loess Plateau

Land Degradation & Development, 2023
AbstractLoess caves are a distinctive and widespread landform on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Their formation contributes considerably to the soil erosion and land degradation; however, quantitative studies that improve the mechanistic understanding of their formation are still lacking. We aimed to explore the formation mechanism of loess caves and

Historical changes in the environment of the Chinese Loess Plateau

Environmental Science & Policy, 2006
Historical records from the past 2000 years indicate that the vegetative cover of the Loess Plateau has declined significantly with time. The decline in vegetative cover seems closely related to increased rates of soil erosion as well as the increased frequency of natural disasters such as floods, droughts and dust storms.

On the problem of land melioration on the Chinese Loess Plateau

GeoJournal, 1995
The Loess Plateau in Northwestern China, with 60 million inhabitants, is strongly endangered by heavy erosion quickly decreasing soil fertility and yield of crops, causing also severe problems in the main river of the area, uplifting its bed by strong sedimentation.

Underlying mechanisms of the geohazards of macro Loess discontinuities on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Engineering Geology, 2019
Abstract Loess discontinuities are geological interfaces that are formed and continuously developed within loess during loessification. Typically, loess discontinuities include joints, cracks, fissures, and layer contact planes. In this study, 13,798 discontinuities on the Loess Plateau in China were examined to demonstrate the control mechanisms ...

Loess magnetic properties in the Ili Basin and their correlation with the Chinese Loess Plateau

Science China Earth Sciences, 2010
Over the past two decades, magnetoclimatological studies of loess-paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP) have made outstanding achievements, which greatly promote the understanding of East Asian paleomonsoon evolution, inland aridification of Asia, and past global climate changes.

Characterization of the collapsible mechanisms of Malan loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau and their effects on eroded loess landforms

Human and Ecological Risk Assessment: An International Journal, 2020
Collapsible loess soils are widely distributed in semiarid and arid regions. The eroded landforms formed by the unique collapsibility of loess may cause environmental damage that puts lives and pro...

Soil characteristics and new formation model of loess on the Chinese Loess Plateau

Geosciences Journal, 2017
In this paper characteristics of loess are discussed from a pedological perspective. A new model of loess formation is presented, developed in different soil formation processes according to its pedogenic characteristics, including soil structure, organic matter content and CaCO3 content.

Changes in mineralogy of loess–paleosol sections across the Chinese Loess Plateau

Quaternary Research, 2011
AbstractQuantitative mineralogical analysis of bulk samples and single particles was carried out on three loess sections of different local climate settings on the Chinese Loess Plateau (CLP). Mineralogy, geochemistry, and single-particle petrography of loess and paleosols are relatively uniform over the CLP. However, in detail, there are mineralogical
