Se llevó a cabo un estudio en las especies de Chirostoma adaptadas exclusivamente a hábitats lacustres, conformado por dos clados hermanos. Un clado incluye al charal prieto Chirostoma attenuatum endémico de los lagos de Pátzcuaro y Zirahuén y el otro clado al “grupo Chirostoma humboldtianum” conformado por nueve especies.
