The study focused on the efficacy of different NSPT protocols in subjects with type 2 diabetes and periodontitis.NSPT was more efficacious than oral hygiene alone or associated with supra‐gingival scaling with regard to all periodontal clinical outcomes, including a small effect on HbA1c.

This paper provides crucial insights and evidence on the effect of non‐surgical periodontal therapy on subgingival microbiota. NSPT leads to significant reductions in disease‐associated microbial species. Supportive periodontal care provision provided further decrease in mean counts of disease‐associated species.
