What is new in the prevention of ventilator-associated pneumonia? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Purpose of review: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) remains a frequent and severe complication in endotracheally intubated patients. Strict adherence to preventive measures reduces the risk of VAP.

Electrospinning Using AC Electric Fields

open access: yesMacromolecular Rapid Communications, EarlyView.
This review covers the state‐of‐the‐art of process of alternating field electrospinning (AFES, a.k.a. AC‐electrospinning). Although tremendous progress is achieved in the development of AC‐electrospinning over the last 10 years, this technique remains uncommon. The synopses of AFES process concepts, parameters, spinneret designs, benefits and obstacles,

Treatment Experience Using a Micro‐Induction Buprenorphine Protocol for Chronic Pain in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease

open access: yesPediatric Blood &Cancer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) experience painful vaso‐occlusive episodes that increase with age; a subset develops chronic pain (CP). CP is usually managed with acute pain management guidelines despite evidence of ineffectiveness.

Investigation of antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activities in novel poly(DEAEMA‐co‐EMA)/polyindole composites

open access: yesPolymer Engineering &Science, EarlyView.
Schematic illustration of prepared poly(DEAEMA‐co‐EMA)/PIN composities and 3D AFM image. Abstract In the current study, in the first stage, amphiphilic poly(2‐diethylamino ethylmethacrylate‐co‐ethyl methacrylate) [Poly(DEAEMA‐co‐EMA)] was synthesized from the 2‐diethylamino ethylmethacrylate (DEAEMA) and the ethyl methacrylate (EMA) using the free ...

Biguanide Hydroiodide as Efficient, Metal‐Free Catalyst for Synthesis of Cyclic Carbonates From CO2 and Epoxides Under Mild Conditions and Its Application to Synthesis of Polymer Bearing Cyclic Carbonate Moiety

open access: yesJournal of Polymer Science, EarlyView.
We developed that novel use of biguanides as catalysts for the efficient synthesis of five‐membered cyclic carbonates (5CCs) from CO2 and epoxides. Among biguanides and their salts, biguanide hydroiodide showed efficient catalysis for the 5CC formation under mild conditions (25°C–60°C and 1 atm of CO2).

Insights on caesarean section in the southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla)

open access: yesVeterinary Record Case Reports, EarlyView.
Abstract An adult female southern tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) was rescued and taken to a veterinary centre for wildlife care. The patient's evaluation revealed an abnormal neurological status, along with prostration, diarrhoea, dehydration and bilateral corneal ulcers. Insecticide poisoning (carbamate, organophosphate or organochlorine) and canine
