Managing Risk, Reinforcing Environmental Racism: The Biopolitics of Pesticide Regulation in California Agriculture

open access: yesReview of Policy Research, Volume 42, Issue 6, Page 1509-1524, November 2025.
ABSTRACT This paper provides a retrospective on California's oversight of 1,3‐dichloropropene (1,3‐D). It utilizes archival documents, including internal memos, emails, and risk assessments, to demonstrate how the state's Department of Pesticide Regulation consistently expanded allowable 1,3‐D use while presenting each policy change as scientifically ...

Ancient Microbiomes as Mirrored by DNA Extracted From Century‐Old Herbarium Plants and Associated Soil

open access: yesMolecular Ecology Resources, Volume 25, Issue 7, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Numerous specimens stored in natural history collections have been involuntarily preserved together with their associated microbiomes. We propose exploiting century‐old soils occasionally found on the roots of herbarium plants to assess the diversity of ancient soil microbial communities originally associated with these plants.

Image_3_Mechanisms by which chloropicrin fumigation promotes soil potassium conversion and absorption.TIF

open access: yes, 2023
Fumigation of soil using chloropicrin has been proven to significantly affect soil nutrient cycling, but the mechanism by which soil potassium conversion and plant uptake is promoted remains unclear. In this study, we conducted a fumigation experiment to

Fusarium spp. associated with asparagus crowns and the influence of the preplant fumigant metam‐sodium in Michigan crown nurseries

open access: yesAnnals of Applied Biology, Volume 186, Issue 3, Page 323-333, May 2025.
Metam‐sodium is commonly used as a preplant fumigant to reduce the presence of Fusarium spp. in asparagus crown nurseries in Michigan. However, in our study, Fusarium populations did not differ between fumigated and non‐fumigated nurseries, indicating that alternative strategies for controlling Fusarium spp. need exploration.

High-throughput sequencing metabarcoding and network analysis elucidate the effects of soil fumigation and biostimulant on potato yield, rhizoctonia canker, and fungal community

open access: yesFrontiers in Soil Science
This study investigated the impact of chloropicrin fumigation and a Bacillus species-based biostimulant applied alone or in combination in soil of potato crop over five key time-points in season.

Genetic Variation in Yield and Fruit Weight Among Strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) Cultivars and the Interaction With Year and Location Effect

open access: yesPlant Breeding, Volume 144, Issue 2, Page 263-272, April 2025.
ABSTRACT Strawberry (Fragaria ×ananassa) is an important crop in the United States. In this study, we analysed strawberry trials established across 7 years and two locations. Our objective was to estimate genetic parameters and predict breeding values for yield.

Hidden in plain sight: the beginnings of French chemical warfare in Morocco’s Rif War (April–July 1925)

open access: yesFrontiers in Political Science
This article reconstructs the early storage and use of chemical agents (chloropicrin, phosgene and mustard gas) by the French army in Morocco’s Rif War (1921–1927). Hitherto, most historiography about the French involvement in this conflict basically has

Chloropicrin Emission Reduction by Soil Amendment with Biochar.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Biochar has sorption capacity, and can be used to enhance the sequestration of volatile organic contaminants such as pesticides in soil. Chloropicrin (CP) is an important soil fumigant for the production of many fruit and vegetable crops, but its ...
