Rethinking Generalization Performance of Surgical Phase Recognition with Expert-Generated Annotations [PDF]
As the area of application of deep neural networks expands to areas requiring expertise, e.g., in medicine and law, more exquisite annotation processes for expert knowledge training are required. In particular, it is difficult to guarantee generalization performance in the clinical field in the case of expert knowledge training where opinions may ...

Predicting Difficult Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy Based on Clinicoradiological Assessment.
INTRODUCTION Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is the gold standard treatment for symptomatic cholelithiasis. However, of all Laparoscopic cholecystectomies, 1-13% requires conversion to an open for various reasons. Thus, for surgeons it would be helpful

The TUM LapChole dataset for the M2CAI 2016 workflow challenge [PDF]
In this technical report we present our collected dataset of laparoscopic cholecystectomies (LapChole). Laparoscopic videos of a total of 20 surgeries were recorded and annotated with surgical phase labels, of which 15 were randomly pre-determined as training data, while the remaining 5 videos are selected as test data.

Surgical gestures—An emerging field for surgical assessment and training
Abstract As surgical training shifts from a traditional method to a more standardized approach, objective analysis and assessment of surgeon performance has become a key focus. Surgical gestures, defined as the smallest independent units of instrument‐tissue interaction, offer a quantifiable way to analyze surgical performance.
